Massive contract for a guy who didn't get 40 points last season...

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Given his rookie year, then somewhat predictable sophomore season this seems like a fair deal. Good deal for the Kraken IMO

This is the sort of thing people were saying when Jack Hughes signed his deal... Beniers isn't Jack Hughes but I have little doubt that he's a first line calibre player and this will age well.

$7/ year isn't what it used to be.
This seems like a good bet for Seattle to make. Even if he doesn't fully live up to expectations, the cap hit is manageable for a top 6 player.

He's only 21. It's a decent deal and much better than signing a 28 year old player to this type of contract as this is the new way of business in the NHL.

If you wait until your best young players pop, you’ll regret it when it’s costs you plenty more or they leave as UFA.
It’s in your knowledge if what your players will do.

People complain the Flames didn't lock up Tkachuk long term coming off his ELC...this is what that looks like.
Tkachuk had 97 points in his first 144 games (0.67 P/GP)
Beniers had 103 points in his first 167 games (0.63 P/GP)
Seattle is hoping they can lock him up before the breakout offensive season. Similar to Tkachuk he's pretty astute 200 ft game already too.

No point in bridging a guy if you have faith in him.
I wonder if Beniers saw any offer sheets come his way during the process. Seattle would have like matched any, but I wonder if things like that have an impact of negotiations.

It’s the same contract as Kadri contract. Seems like a good swing for the Kraken

Kraken have the WORST contracts. Haha.
That's a true expansion franchise.

$7 million is the new $5 million.
People also need to consider that they see more than just what we see as fans. They see what Beniers is capable of in practice and when he's not contributing on the ice. They have a much better gauge of his talent. The whole team last year was garbage. The highest scorer had 62 points.
Even if Beniers tops out as a 55-60 point guy, this is a fair contract. He obviously still has the potential for much more.

No problem with this deal at all. It's what most teams do now.......you have a very good young player, you lock them up for a lot of years at decent money and hope they pop like you project they will. If they do, it's a great deal for the team. Not a terrible strategy.

I'm also in the camp that likes this, it's moving more towards paying for what you expect the player will produce vs the old model of paying based on past performance.
Not that projecting performance is easy, especially on young players, but it's better than handing out the huge contracts to players over 30 just because of how they produced earlier - when you know it's going to decline.

Conroy should be on the phone with Francis. The Krakens are going to have to dump some salary to get compliant.
Flames could take Gourde and their 2025 1st and everyone's a winner!

It's as though you speak as a fan of a team that fumbled in the dark when it came to signing their own young players.

Some teams are starting to learn to lock up potential vs pay old guys for past performance.
Would you rather have 21y old Beniers at $7 X 7 or 29yr old Lindholm at $7.75 X 7?
