This season with a tired, beat up squad is one where you absolutely expect to have to grind it out to have any chance of repeating a deep run. It should be one where you are been stocking the D cupboards heavily with good, experienced NHL bodies to withstand the grind.
Doing the opposite and going with Nurse and a bunch of replacement level players in the bottom 4 is a bold strategy. The Oilers are always gonna Oil though.

Pretty wild ending to the saga IMO.
I was pretty high on Holloway and figured he would become a middle six winger for the team. Even at $2.3 million, if Holloway became that player over the course of the contract, it would be a bargain deal.
It appears that either the Oilers decided that the additions of Podkolzin and Emberson would replicate Broberg's and Holloway's contributions to the club, or Kane is not going on IR and they had to just make space for that to happen.
Emberson has the analytics guys in a stir already. Will be interesting to follow this guy through the season to see if there is any merit to what the models are seeing in him.

We understand. But we're rebuilding, not 'Going For It.'

Appreciate Oil Stain for staying in the hornets nest on stuff like this. I'm always curious about reasonable Oiler fans but can't muster the care to go through the HF chiadenfraude.
Gotta be weird to be looking at your team like that. By comparison, the Flames and fans were largely blind-sided by Johnny and Chucky leaving. Oilers are going to be looking down the barrel for a whole season knowing there's really no option but to implode this thing.
The smart thing to do would be to trade both McDavid and Leon now for a huge haul and just start over. Sucks, but it happens and sometimes you gotta bite the bullet. Otherwise you're just going to run out the clock and be left with nothing or very little.

This is mind-bottling.
Why trade Ceci if you weren't going to match?

Oil Stain is fine, a more or less reasonable Oilers fan.
However, as he is still an Oilers fan, I am contractually obligated to bust his chops from time to time. At least a little.

I always enjoyed Holloway's piss and vinegar. Glad I can now be happy if he finds his hands at this level too.

Ceci sucks. Always has. Thing is, the Oilers build their team differently. They take cast aways to fill the D spots and spend on FWs. Holland made a change in that philosophy by trading for Ekholm.

The crazy thing is the Oilers blueline is so bad that Ceci actually provided value for the team.

Tough part for the oilers management is they sold the whole decade of darkness on hope. The oilers fans were rewarded with year after year of embarrassing seasons until they finally lucked into McDavid. And, after all that, they will finish the McDavid era with no cups, they will try to sell hope again. Hope that you’ll get a young player better than McDavid? That you’ll handle that era better?
I know the fans will buy in anyways. What else can fans do? But the frustration they will feel will probably be worse than any other fanbases going into a rebuild.

Ceci does suck, but he was good for Edmonton. He could play a regular shift, and he was big for their PK.
Now they are down Broberg, Ceci and Holloway.
I hope they set the record for worst PK next season.

Compared to the playoffs last year:
Out:
Foegele
Holloway
McLeod
Carrick
Ceci
Broberg
Desharnais
In:
Arvidsson
Skinner
Savoie
Podkolzin
Brown
Emberson
Stecher
They have flashier forwards, but their team defense (both forwards and dmen) took a big hit this offseason and it already wasn't a strength.

They may have flashier forwards, but both of them likely are not too see much ice time or even be in the NHL full time. The other 2 are older, and slower. One is a buyout and the other has injury concerns.
The defence was terrible, but they just threw a bomb to it and now they may have the worst defensive group in the NHL.
Also the oldest team in the league, and someone posted a chart of 30 plus teams making the finals and its pretty much just Detroit and they had Lidstrom.

Yup they got a lot older this offseason, only 9 players under 28 years old played in the playoffs last year for the Oilers...5 of them are gone now.
Holloway - 21
Broberg - 22
Bouchard - 23
Mcleod - 23
Skinner - 24
McDavid - 26
Draisaitl - 27
Foegele - 27
Desharnais - 27

And solid goaltending and Yzerman, Zetterberg, Datsyuk...and on and on.
Huh. What do Yzerman, Zetterberg and Datsyuk have in common? I think...yeah, I think it might be two-way play.
Funny thing that.

Kane probably refused to go to season ending LTIR. They needed the cap space to fit him in mid season.

Well, the last time the Red Wings made the finals with Yzerman, Zetterberg wasn't on the team yet and Datsyuk had 6 points. So he's probably referring to the 08/09 runs which were post-Yzerman.

I am. Those Red Wing teams also had 37 year old Lidstrom and 45 year old Chelios who probably skew that avg age a bit. Also 42 year old Hasek. Shoot and Dallas Drake 38 years old lol.

Could be NHL pressure too.
I have never doubted the players that go on LTIR are hurt ... I think that's tinfoil hat stuff.
But if a Kucherov or Kane are delayed until late September to have a surgery that they could have had in early July so they don't return until after the deadline it starts to create a circumvention issue.
Teams got away with the sliding cap for years, until they didn't.

Yeah.
The "We cant find a Doctor" nonsense is a non-starter for me.
Wealthy Athletes can get this done tomorrow. Lets not BS it.
