I read it as a million bucks under with Kane on the roster.

I'm guessing that Kane still goes on LTIR, so the Oilers can have a bit of cap flexibility.

But lets look at this.

The Oilers gave up a ton of speed, with Foegele, Holloway and MacLeod sent packing.
The Oilers gave up defense for hopeful offense.
The Oilers got older.
The Oilers have very little in the way of good prospects and futures.
The Oilers have some draft picks for next year, but nothing good, and they suck drafting outside of the first round.
In 10 days the Draisaitl window closes.
Can you hear it people? The lugnuts flying off of the Oilers bus.
They'd best win the cup this year, because they're heading to a decade of darkness with a gross General Manager.

I guess Ceci had negative value (paid a 3rd to get rid of him). But that trade created the ability to match. Oilers GM was able to twist Armstrong into giving up a 3rd or he might match.

So cleared Ceci for nothing net net. Still a disaster for Oilers, but that's only reason i see the Ceci trade making sense.

San Jose look like the 2nd worst idiots here.

Sureloss’ post from Strickland’s tweet said that oilers offered Broberg 2 years at $1.1 million per season and Holloway a 3 year deal at $1.050 million per season.

This blows the Staples et al “choosing to leave Mavi” narrative out of the water.

Holloway will make $2.3 AAV and Broberg $4.6 AAV.

Besides the obvious benefit of the opportunity to play away from the greasers, Holloway will make the entire 3 year offer in less than 18 months and then be able to add to that in the next 18 months. Broberg (who asked to be traded twice) will earn his entire oilers offer in less than 6 months with the blues.

I don’t get the “future considerations” trade but whatever!

They have to be the oldest team in the league by now.

Apparently Ceci was really liked in the room and players (McDavid, Draisaitl) had gone up to Holland to ask he not be traded at the deadline last year.

This whole series of transactions not only makes the Oilers worse on D (at least on paper) and older, but also takes a liked player away for no apparent reason.

And I see Oiler fans talking like this team is going to make it to finals again. I don’t really see it

If Drysaddle doesn’t extend they are in for a world of hurt. Even if he does, how do you fill out a roster? It’s do or die for the grease this year. My prediction is die.

They are the only team in the league with an average age of 30+.

The Oilers lost their two most promising young players / prospects for pennies on the dollar. That is amazing.

Now they can sign a couple of morally suspect players to add to the grease

At an absolutely critical point of competitive roster development.

In a separate transaction, St. Louis is sending its 2028 third-round draft pick and unsigned 2023 fifth-round draft selection Paul Fischer to Edmonton for future considerations.
What's the point of St. Louis sending an extra 3rd-round pick and Paul Fischer to Edmonton for nothing? Because they feel bad for the Oilers?

Oilers playing games with matching or not would be my guess

Sure, they got rid of Ceci for nothing, but Ceci wasn't dead cap space, he was their #4 defenseman.

They have now lost Ceci, Desharnais and Broberg (#4, 6 and 7)

They have replaced them with Stecher, Emberson and Brown. NONE of those 3 are a top 6 NHL defenseman. So, while they 'got rid of Ceci's contract', they still have to replace Ceci with another 2nd pairing Dman, which will cost them dearly.

I'll say it: the Oilers' defense is now worse (significantly, IMO) than the Flames', and the Flames are in year 1 of a rebuild.

Extra incentive for the Oilers not to match the offer sheet.

Basically St. Louis told the Oilers if you don't match the offer sheet we will give you an extra 3rd and a prospect so you don't look so bad when you lose 2 top 15 picks that stepped up in the playoffs.

Objectively the Blues did not give up much. A 3rd in a draft that is 4 years away, and Fischer is an unsigned 5th round pick. But easier for the Oilers to spin they squeezed something more out than the standard RFA compensation package

Also probably trying to ensure they're not close to the 50 contract limit going into camp.

Speculation that the Oilers said they would not match if STL threw them that bone. Well worth it for STL, they get 2 good young players for a 2nd, 2 3rds, and a 5th round draft pick.

And now everyone is that much more aware that they're in cap trouble and their own players know they are being lowballed and could potentially (rightly or wrongly) get paid way better away from that cesspool. It'll be a strong narrative that goes with the team for years.
