To jump on the Casablanca love, it's one of the few films that I can watch at anytime and be floored by the artistry of the script. The text, subtext, the breaths allowed by the director; there is just such amazing flow. The gold standard.

I know that Criterion is keeping many of these films alive in the public sphere, but I worry that some of the great movies are not going to be watched because streaming is so random and mercurial. Another of my favorites is the French Connection, and I had an advertisement popup tell me that it's leaving Netflix. To where? The ether, or is it now on Thoraz Bubblesnort +?

Oh... it looks like Casablanca is on Crave. I need to watch it again.

Speaking of an old classic, I just watched Vivacious Lady from 1932 with Ginger Rogers and James Stewart.

Just a completely charming comedy.

I also recently watched a classic Japanese horror, Jigoku from 1960.

The character Tamura might be the coolest mother####er in film history:

French Connection is permanently on Disney+ so no worries on that particular title. That said, Disney is the absolute worst culprit when it comes to keeping their catalogue titles in the public’s memory. Disney no longer manufactures physical media, and they refuse to license anything in their extensive back catalogue (both the Fox stuff and their own) to other boutique distributors, unlike the other major studios. Warner still releases the own catalogue titles through Warner Archive, licenses freely to Criterion/Kino etc and keeps their own classics readily available on streaming. Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind etc. still maintain their status as we’ve moved into the streaming era while you’ve seen once prominent classic titles like All About Eve or The Grapes of Wrath definitely fade into the ether a little. Depends on the priorities of the studio. Disney doesn’t even treat their own classic animated films with any respect, they treat the Fox back catalogue even more shabbily.

Well, luckily I never had Disney+, so they aren't allowed to legally kill any of my loved ones. However, Fox had a string of great B, B+, A- movies in the 80's and 90's that might just be gone forever, then. I guess Disney is just doing their part to keep illegal downloading alive.

I watched the original 12 angry men last night. what a master piece of story telling. I can see why it's always up there in lists of greatest movies.

I'm a big Coen brothers fan but I never got around to watching The Ladykillers until last night. I didn't hate it but it deserves its reputation as their worst film. A few of the characters were annoying, especially Lump. As a comedy of errors it just didn't have any good laughs, although I did get a chuckle out of the dead husband's painting.

Don't bother watching unless you're a completist.

Unfortunately Disney edited the movie French Connection on Disney+ and removed a key scene so the only way to see the complete movie is on the Blu Ray

Casablanca just had a beautiful 4K release that includes 2 commentary tracks including one from Roger Ebert that is filled with great insight. He said "in an era where most people think cinema started with Star Wars, kids still constantly come back to Casablanca".

Watched a cult classic last night - Miracle Mile. An odd, bleak movie where boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy tries to get girl back before a looming nuclear holocaust. Definitely a product of its time (1988) that's worth a watch.

I liked Alien, Aliens, and portions of Promethius, and still fewer portions of Aliens 3.

Romulus was awesome. I guess they hired what was left of the FX crews from the 86 Aliens co, and did much of the movie with practcal effects and models. Loved the look on Imax.

Good characters, good plot. Dug it.

It was a rock solid entry. No glaring weaknesses unlike in recent ones.

Tension and suspense are so rarely pulled off in movies today. I think the practical elements of this one made it more visceral and immersive. Go figure.....

There was everything I love about a good sci-fi thriller and I did not expect that going in.

I'm re-watching all 5 of the Mad Max films, today was Beyond Thunderdome. While it's certainly the worst one of the franchise, I feel there are some redeeming parts. Tina Turner is excellent, the theme song rocks, I loved the sets and costumes (and Max's mullet). And the fight scene in the Thunderdome between Blaster and Max was cool. This would make a fun double feature with Hook. Unfortunately no Mad Max films should be rated pg 13. Didn't understand why they went this direction, bringing in the lost boys and girls is an odd direction to take this ultra violent franchise.

I don't generally like comedies, but What About Bob? Is one of the few I find hilarious. It seems everyone I know falls into the category as either a Bob Wiley or Dr. Leo Hoffman - and I think that's a large part of the film's appeal.

Saw it tonight, the main Alien could have been a little sneakier but all in all better than I expected and the twist at the end was awesome, hope it makes a boat load of money in hope studios invest in more big budget sci-fi horrors.

Google says Romulus cost 80 million to make, so hopefully with opening weekend pulling in 108 million they can follow the example.

Just give that guy the reins to Alien moving forward.

Ridley Scott was lost at sea with the last couple.

Turns out getting back to basics and not over complicating things was the answer. We didn't need a grandiose arc about human nature/origin starring multiple Fassbender characters (as brilliant as he is).

Word of mouth has been awesome. So it could have pretty great legs.

But yes, it turns out both Aliens and Predator just needed to go back to basics. The last predator movie, Prey was also great, as it stuck with the simple formula from the 1st movie.

Breathe on Paramount+ is terrible. Do yourself a favour and avoid it. Starring Common, Jennifer Hudson, Milla Jovovich and Sam Worthington. Not terrible, right? Nope. Terrible.

If you hadn't mentioned it I'd probably never have heard about it.

Look at what you've done. LOOK AT IT!!!!
