I suspect they match both now. Kane LTIR and someone to minors. Kick the can down the road.

I can see a scenario where they let Broberg go and then sign someone like Barrie, Shultz, or Shatternkirk as stop gap.
I think a lot of it will depend on whether Kane agrees to play ball and go on LTIR. If he does, it makes matching Broberg easier.
There is chatter on the internet that Oilers might announce their decisions later today.

Technically both players have contracts (Broberg and Holloway). We just don't know who owns those contracts year.
But yeah, probably more about both of their statuses in limbo at the moment and they are doing housekeeping on the website.

Not matching is probably the right thing to do TBH especially with Broberg.
Pacific division is pretty weak, and the Oilers should be able to get into the playoffs regardless.
As of right now the Oilers have $1.9M of cap space without Broberg and Holloway on the roster. That's with 13 forwards, and 6 d-men signed on the roster.
Their forwards are deep enough they probably don't need Holloway at $2.3M (although personally I'd match that).
And on defense they probably could use another body, but I don't think Broberg at $4.6M makes sense in their cap structure.
If I were the Oilers I'd be going into the season with this roster, leaning on the stars and forward to get you into a playoff spot, and then when you have a ton of cap space at the deadline due to cap accrual you try to bring in actual top end talent to put you over the top ($1.9M in cap space they have right now, is more like $8M or so at the deadline I think).
I'd rather be able to add a dman like Burns, Provorov, Chychrun etc at the deadline than give Broberg $4.6M right now.

Why would Burns be available? Carolina is just as much of a contender

I see Spector has up some piece of trash where he's soiled his ceiling crowing about how the Oilers did a great bit of out of the box thinking to retain both players. Last week he was sneering that they should dump Broberg because the 2nd round pick would get s better vet at the deadline. Today trading Ceci to keep both guys is ground breaking GM work.

If they lose one or both I'll be satisfied because then prospect base is decimated further.
If they agree to match that number for Broberg I'll also be satisfied given that it's twice as much as they were projecting to pay him and he's not a proven entity.
Rooting for the Calgarian to escape the clutches of that hell hole.

You never know...
That Carolina d-core isn't nearly as strong looking as it once was after losing Pesce and Skjei for nothing this past offseason. And the forward group lost Teravainen, Guentzel, and Noesen.
Teravainen and Noesen were 3rd and 6th among forwards on the team in scoring last season, Skjei led the team in scoring among dmen and was 6th overall.
I'm not sure they fully replaced those guys with Jack Roslovic and William Carrier up front, and with Sean Walker and Shayne Gostisbehere on the backend.
I could easily see a step back for Carolina this season.

Collectively they'd reach the IQ of one competent non-edmonton media personality.

Stan Bowman could literally fart in Spector's mouth and Spector would call it Christmas dinner.

Matching Broberg is dumb at that salary, but they really have no option now after trading Ceci.
Who slides up? Josh Brown?
After the top pairing which us plumped up by McDavid, it just may be the worst d core in the NHL.
They are lucky the pacific is weak as it is that they can probably win the division with 100 points. They wont last in the playoffs if a team plays them the way Florida did.
