If you look at the Flames cap situation, that shouldn't be a problem. Kuzmenko is the only contract expiring this season where they might be inclined to retain and Backlund and Andersson are the only two next season and they both have low enough cap hits that there will likely still be interest even without any retention (especially with the cap increasing again next year).
If they can get a good enough return for retaining some on Laine, it will probably be better than what they could get being a third party on a deadline trade (which usually gets a 4th-6th round pick).

Flames aren't getting Sillinger for retaining salary folks. If that even comes to pass.

Makes sense
I would like to see him get a chance at redemption. Here or elsewhere
And I think the team that gives him that chance could get a steal

Retention on Laine would be for the next two years so that's two slots encumbered for two years. Not that makes it impossible but as the poster you were responding to said, it should be for a good price.

Ideally, all three retention slots should constantly be in use, then they are being maximized.

Don’t think anybody was implying that. Some like me would like Sillinger but obviously we would have to give something up to get him.

It's worth keeping one open for trades close to the deadline, when teams know if they're contending and the contenders are capped out.

I assume you're right and guys like Johnston, and Sillinger are off the table, despite underperforming last year.
I think Gavin Brindley could be a pretty savvy add for the Flames. He's small(5'9"), but his skating is absolutely amazing. The guy is tenacious though, plays with pace, and a ton of energy. He also has good hands and puck protection. He would be a perfect Bread replacement and a staple in the middle 6.

From what Waddell said on overdrive, it sounds like the dressing room is the issue in CBJ.
They are trying to rebuild. City is tough for UFA's. Bunch of great young players getting drafted. And there are some poor leaders or bad personalities in there?
What a disaster that would be.
The focus on bringing in a tough coach makes more sense.
I hope to hell that doesn't happen with Calgary. And I don't see it happening either. Just please don't trade for whoever is part of the problem in that room.

Well yes but also no, you want them being used but I wouldn't want more than one to be used for long term (two seasons). A rebuilding team like the Flames should have at least one each trade deadline that will return to them that summer for flexibility.
Not interested in Laine at all, unless they think he can turn it around and flip him next year and if the Flames are just in for retention it should be a high cost as two of our three slots will be gone until July 1st 2027. That's two trade deadlines with less flexibility.

The way teams are reticent to use them makes them close to a ubiquity and certainly not a scarcity. Sure, it's possible that the Flames are the only team that can broker a deadline deal, but the risk is that they're not, and then you turned down a 4th or 5th round pick for nothing. A wasted retention slot doesn't earn interest.

Sure, which is why I'm not against it just hope they make the value worth it to lose the flexibility for the next two years. Kuzmenko is a player they'll hopefully use a spot on this trade deadline if he's playing well.

I'm surprised Anaheim hasn't snagged him yet. They seem to be bored of having top picks...it's a place where Laine might be able to bounce back.
