You don’t like when someone protects your freedoms and rights?
You do realize a lot of these people are not of sound mind and body correct? I don't think people understand the level of psychosis here. They actually need society and the government to assist them with their #1 issue which is drug abuse, getting clean, off the streets, rehabbed, houses and fed quality food. That is what I have advocated this entire time but this needs to be done in a more forceful way because the people who are living this life are not capable of making these decisions for themselves, because they are not of sound mind and body.
We don't allow this nonsense in other aspects of society to the same degree as we do in this situation. Why? Cause certain behaviors make people a danger to themselves and to others. This is a founding principle of a basic, functioning society.
We don't want children playing with matches and gasoline. We don't legally allow 50 year olds to sleep with 12 year olds. We have limits on blood alcohol and driving, we have medical standards for people who drive, we have subsidized housing and programs for dementia patients, we have building codes for construction so people don't get hurt. And on and on and on.
I have dealt with these people my entire life having grown up in downtown Calgary and having a family business down there. They are my customers, I have always tried to help out wherever I can with basic things like some extra food, allowing them to warm up, use the phone to call "friends" which usually is their dealers, exchanging their coins for bills etc.
These people need help but they need society in today's age to actually stop or limit allowing this nonsense to continue. You think your being a nice person by sticking up for them, but these people need society, organizations and government to step in for their best interests. They share such little in common with you on a day to day basis that I don't think you can process it. Take the scenarios I deal with and apply them to you. What is in your best interest? Sticking up for "rights" of being high and living a life of hell or getting clean, sober, housed, fed, employed and more like having internet access to argue with nitwits on CP all day.
Scenario: It's -30 in Calgary and there goes Pepsi walking around without shoes and a coat. Hasn't wiped his ass in weeks, showered in god knows how long, continues to scratch his ass in public while calling people (without a phone, just with a phone gesture) " Hello Police, there is some guy here who is trying to take my Rolex watch, can you send someone quick"
Ahhh Pepsi, you don't have a Rolex watch, any change you want to exchange, get something to eat? "I got $6 grand in my wallet " Pepsi then takes out $4.62 in coins. "Here is a $5 bill Pepsi, all the best. Get something to eat today"
Pepsi then begins to tell me how he is currently eating a sandwich and not hungry, despite the fact that I have never seen him with food other than slurpees. "Ahhh Pepsi, your currently chewing on a piece of cardboard that is covered in some nasty things. Please get something to eat and give me the cardboard so I can throw it away.
"Don't worry Curves!! I am heading over to Elbow River Casino now where sometimes Jack, who is a 77 year old card player and horse gambler, gives me $5 or 10 dollars for a BJ in the underground parking lot in his 86 Lincoln. It used to be $40 but he says ever since I lost my teeth and gotten this skinny, I don't look as beautiful anymore. That's ok though, when Jack is in a good mood, he gives me a ride up to Forest Lawn so I can see my kid and collect some more money up there from some other guys. We usually stop by Walmart so I can snag some steaks and some parmesan cheese for him in exchange for the ride (stolen)
"Alright Pepsi, take care and stay warm out there. All the best! Just wondering though, what happened to that Calgary Flames Hoodie I gave you a few weeks ago, it's -30 out and you are virtually unclothed?"
"I exchanged it for a bubble pipe and a slurpee" Pepsi added

Great, and so where are you drawing the line. What about the mother r father in suburbia drinking their way to oblivion, about to lose their job and their house.
Can we intervene just a bit earlier and haul them away too? What other people can we lock up? Who gets to make the judgements of who we are forcing into treatment?
The situation is incredibly tragic, I get distressed when I think about it too much. Most of these folks have been slipping through our myriad of faulty systems for their entire lives and in many cases for generations.
We are failing at this to be sure, and we need to step up our game Ina number of fronts. We also can’t just start rounding people up and locking them away, force treatment on them and say mission accomplished. The charter and practical issues with this are astoundingly large. We need to work harder on prevention - break the cycle of poverty, we need way better housing and treatment options, we do need a criminal justice system that crushes those who are taking advantage of our vulnerable. I could go on and on of all the things we are failing to do.
What grinds my gears is how people defend this social decay like it's a nothing burger to them. I am still shocked by the comments I have read today. Perhaps some peoples brains are fried from years of their own drug abuse and they can't comprehend what is happening, or why if something happened to them, it really wouldn't matter to anybody on here, that is for sure.
When you go kiss your children to bed tonight, know how lucky they are to have you, until when someone like this kills you and then you just know the sad truth, your just garbage in the eyes of the general public. 2 little children lost their dad to this person in the last few days. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...ents-1.7296180
I am also speaking as someone who doesn't have children.
Or know that if your sister or brother was dropping off their children at school and they were murdered at the school, in front of the children, your family member is well, worthless. No argument, let us just defend criminals, drug abuse and social decay. Let us minimize the impact that drugs is happening in society.
Maybe I will start a follow up to the gear grinder thread. "Ohh well" Posters can discuss assaults, robberies, sexual exploitations of their children, their parents being accosted, their sister murdered and their business and life's work going down the toilet.
We can collectively do a CP "Ohh wellllllllllllllllll" We can just brush it off.
Anyways I am out on this topic
I’m sorry Curves, but I had this in my head the whole time

If we could just replace fentanyl with Chalet Sauce? We could solve a lot of the world's problems.
And hey! They even have a drive-through! Not that most Junkies have cars.
Plus the obesity epidemic is objectively more fun than the opioid epidemic.
We need more documentaries where people eat McDonalds for a month. These were silly times, and we really didn’t know what we had. But this time it can just be about people who drink nothing but chalet sauce for a month. Let’s see what happens.

Lets be honest. We all know whats going to happen.
And it involves shovels and the Woods at night.
Can't a man carry a shovel into the woods after dark without an Inquisition anymore???

I think curves came at it with a genuine heartfelt attemp to covey nuance and compassion.
Regrettably they posted it to the internet, so things will go predictibly.
An abundance of confidence and lack of substance to back it up will do that to a person.
When you:
- claim indisputable facts that are easily disputed
- suggest the need to ask hard questions you never ask or explain
- claim people suggesting practical solutions are actually saying the problem doesn’t exist or are drug users themselves
- allude to “the people behind this” without ever making who or what or why clear
- totally misrepresent the issue
then yeah, “the internet” I guess.
Being someone who complains about social issues while also complaining about all the avenues through which the fix to those social issues could be funded is a little cherry on top.
It’s not like he’s unique. It’s a very Canadian thing. Surface level complaints about anything and everything but when push actually comes to shove, “Oh, not for me, someone else can be burdened with that, thanks.”
Eventually people who actually want to solve issues like homelessness, the opioid epidemic, and fix our ailing healthcare system have to realize we have to pay for those things.

So you're calling for society to step in to look out for their best interests, meanwhile you're helping them contact their dealers and consolidating their cash for the dealer's preferred payment method.
A step in the right direction might be for you to stop actively helping them buy drugs.

If it's December, I may do it. How bout I just have to douse Chalet Sauce on everything I eat?
EDIT: just noticed this was my 14,000th post. Just feels right.
