Unless the offer sheet includes a NMC? Wouldn’t Oilers have to match that too?

Players are only eligible to have a NMC/NTC when they're old enough for UFA status, so that's not possible on an offer sheet to an RFA.

There was some funny stuff with Todd Marchant when the Jackets couldn't get him to waive his NTC in the Fedorov trade. Although rumour is that the Jackets didn't tell him where he would be traded because the Ducks didn't want him to know. So they waived Marchant and the Ducks did claim him. But I can't remember if the Ducks maybe had someone else lined up in front of them to claim his contract.

Farther back than that. Probably more than a decade or even two maybe. It was a story told by a former GM on a podcast I listened to within the last couple years. Just can’t remember specifically who the player was, nor who told it. Sounded like a story told enough to have some lore though.

Essentially Broberg for Kostin and cap savings while screwing over the Blues.
I don’t know how the NHL would handle this given that it’s a plan designed to circumvent the “can’t trade an offer-sheeted player” rule.
|
I can’t imagine that would work, but if so, it doesn’t really screw St. Louis. Edmonton gets a worse asset and still have cap problems.
Even better if Part B is:
SJ trade a Broberg (SJ is not the matching party, so why not?) to St. L. for the 2nd.
Everyone wins except for the coilers. (Everyone wins)

How awesome is this for Broberg? Get offered like a full 2x your worth to go to a better location. Imagine a competitor in your industry doubling your salary and a much better office to go work for them. Lucky guy.

Good for Broberg and Holloway getting paid over value no matter where they end up. And screwing up Oiler management plans. There ought to be more chaos like this ongoing in this twisted corrupt league.

The more I think about it, the less likely it is for Edmonton to match the Broberg offer. They are already in a tough spot with their cap. He’s made trade requests already and now signed an offer sheet. The kid will be under a ton of pressure after this - the fans will be all over him if he struggles at all. It would be kind of crazy for the oilers to match on Broberg.

Not to mention, by all accounts they had him penciled in for around half of that Cap.
The problem really stems from the fact, he's actually one of their few good D-me. You look at that Top 6 without him and they're not likely making it to the finals of a Peewee tournament, granted, he doesnt really move the needle that much and you're right, all signs point to him wanting to get the hell out of Dodge.

The Oilers are trying to move out veteran d-man Brett Kulak and/or Cody Ceci, Garrioch reported. “But, if teams are going to make those deals, they’re going to want something extra from the Oilers to take on Ceci or Kulak’s contracts. We’re told that could be a first- or second-round pick in both scenarios because teams know they’ve got Jackson cornered.”
As for who is to blame for this situation, Garrioch said Jackson was once an agent and should have known an offer sheet was a possibility. “It’s easy for Jackson and Bowman to point the finger at former GM Ken Holland, but the reality is this is on the current Oilers regime. ..Jackson has no one to blame but himself.”

I have no idea who Jeff Jackson is, but in my opinion the buck stops with the GM be that Holland for taking his time or Bowman.

Jeff Jackson is Bowman’s (and before that Holland’s) boss. They report to him and he approves all strategic moves. He was also the acting GM for almost the entire time that the two players could have been signed after the playoffs.

I’m one who thinks given the chance that Broberg is a top 4 in the future. Dummies have him playing wrong side with crap D partners. Losing him means that team is stuck with ekholm and ######bomb as only actual top 4 blueliners for foreseeable future.
So keen to see what they try to plug in after he leaves.

That was less Waddell and more Tom Dundon. He was pretty annoyed that the Canadiens thought he was broke after folding his football league and would be too cheap to pay Aho.

But isnt the actual signing of the players supposed to be the GM's Gig?
He cant approve something that hasn't been presented to him for approval.
