The Canes had a hell of a run.

Didn't Tyler Dellow formerly have an account on these forums and once claimed that Ty Conklin (or maybe it was some other scrub Oilers goalie, my memory is hazy on this) was statistically better than Martin Brodeur?

Or am I thinking about somebody else?

Haven't followed him since the mudcrutch days but he was an absolute slaves to the numbers back when. Obviously he won't be calling the shots in Carolina and will be insulated with hockey people and will be the CBA-Cap guy, a perfect role for him.

Pretty sure that was him. And it was an asinine argument. But I think more than a few people have posited that Brodeur really was more of a product of the system in front of him than people like to admit.

Was it Deelow or Mudcrutch 79?

Conklin's even strength save percentage is better than Brodeur, hence he's a better goaltender!

No wonder New Jersey was sunk by their goaltending if he was over there.

And it wasn't just Conklin he would do that with. He could take practically any Oilers player and use statistical trickery for why that player was better than other players. He actually turned me off of fancy stats for a long time because he continuously showed how they can be used to trick people.

As opposed to a “slave” for the “this worked before so this will always work” mentality? I don’t know who this person is.

Great teams innovate, mediocre teams imitate, and poor teams are stuck in their old world mentality.

It's entirely possible that Conklin isn't better than Brodeur, but it's also possible that he is. The data from last year suggests that he's in the same ballpark at ES.

He used any stat he could find to justify his case that the Oilers were a perennial contender done in by luck.

Are the Canes trolling CP?

This guy was hilariously off the mark and none of his predictions came true.

I have no doubt he is good with numbers as he has stuck around in pro hockey for a bit now. I have to assume that he is a little more objective and realistic now that his job isn't trolling a Flames message board. Either that, or Eric Tulsky just wants a hype guy who can make all his moves look great, and just done in by bad luck if they don't work out.

Or did data availability advance in 20 years and arguments develop? The quoted post shows discussion of the variability in PKSV% Y/Y, pretty advanced thinking at the time.

It’s not some has-been like Stan Bowman making the hire. It’s Eric Tulsky.
