Because they drafted him and paid him a lot of money? I don't know for sure why he signed the 8 on his last deal but I suspect those are the reasons. He also had limited options as an RFA. Maybe him and Draisaitl wanted to try and win a Cup together with the understanding that after this contract they would have given Edmonton some loyalty for drafting them plus trying to win a Cup together? There could be lots of reasons. I just know his heart is set on Toronto.

Did anybody ever ask him if he grew up with Leafs pajamas?
I wonder if anybody in the league grew up with Oilers sweatpants?

I imagine Bobby Orr was very influential in signing the big deal as well. As a guy who had his career shortened by injury, take the 100M and set your family up for life, regardless of what happens. But now you've made your money, you've been loyal to a team for 10 years, go where you want

He had nearly unlimited options as a RFA. Examples of top tier talent coming out of RFA. Crosby, Stamkos, Toews, Kane all do 5 year deals. McDavid could have said to the Oilers $14Mx5 and they would have done it.

Why did Tavares go 6 with the Islanders if he had the same feelings about Toronto that McDavid does? There could be many reasons.

Guaranteed himself a $100M contract at the age of 21.
There's very legitimate risk in only signing a 5yr/60M contract at that time. What if he gets injured?

Nah. One of the main perks of signing with the Flames is at least you won't be traded to the Oilers. That could screw us down the road.

Draisaitl walks in 2025. McDavid walks in 2026.
The Oilers are now a lottery team and all they have to look forward to is their 2027 top 3 pick but wait! This is now owned by the Flames who are now a young exciting team pushing for a playoff spot in a brand new building. That would be the sweetest timeline.

2026 1st, 2027 1st, Kulak, and Lavoie and even then I'd need all the picks to be unprotected to even think about it.
If Drai leaves after 24-25 and McDavid after 25-26 then those picks would be worth it.
But if both guys stick around then you're likely getting two picks in the 25-30 range which would be pretty meh.
It's just not worth trading with the Oilers.

This makes too much sense for it not to happen. Definitely could see some Lebron/McD cross promotion. I would think that McDavid would be a lock to host SNL, just like Gretzky.
