Anyone buying one of the 30,000+ Model 3's Hertz is bringing back into the used market? Gotta think they're batteries are cooked if it's all quick charge and typical rental behaviour. Wonder what it does to used BEV pricing in Canada even though I think most of the sales are South of the border.
I have to really disagree with you guys. It's one thing to make an EV, it's a completely different thing to make money making EVs.
As for startups, Fisker is belly up, Rivian has had everything go their way with Ford, Amazon and Volkswagen drilling up their bank accounts and they're still likely a ways off from being profitable ten years later. Volkswagen pivoted and now are in big trouble, and only really Hyundai has been able to pivot successfully. Ford and GM are making EVs at a pretty good loss at the moment.
The amount of investment is very high and with legacy ICE infrastructure and supply chains that have significant liability, you can't just flip a switch. I think Toyota had a good couple years and then things are gonna go south quickly by the end of the decade as the switch to EVs begins in earnest.
I think you argue Toyota's points for them. It is very hard to make a profit right now, as you see other manufacturers dumping billions into them. So why follow that? What's the benefit? There are also drawbacks to making less than ideal vehicles for your customers, and you risk brand damage. Alternatively, they can sit on the sidelines until materials drop in price low enough for it to make sense, and for infrastructure and all the other complications to settle in.

For most manufacturers making more modest EV's at a profit is impossible. Hybrids have been out for 20 plus years and are just now starting to take their place as the top sellers in the market. Toyota's sales and profitability are both very strong right now. Until they can start making their Prius/Corrola/Camry/Rav4 EV's at comparable prices it likely doesn't make sense for them to go all out into EV's. Everyone outside of the Hyundai group have walked back their initial production targets. I think its another decade for mass EV adoption or at least until the EV version of the Corolla or Civic hits the market.

Depending on where you need the 240 service, and what your panel looks like right now, it could be a couple hundred bucks. It could be a few thousand.
But depending on how much driving you do on a daily basis, and what kind of energy recovery you get, it's very possible you don't need a 240V/level 2 charger.
I have a fully electric car (MachE), and we just use the 120V outlet in the garage. We drive ~9 km round trip to work every day. We burn ~3-5% of the batter in a round trip and get 1-1.5%/hr charging at home, so we never need to charge elsewhere for our normal driving.
You may want/need one depending on how far you're driving each day, but honestly, give it a try without for a while to see if it's worth it/if you need it.

I have had it a for a couple of weeks now, our current commute is 50km round trip so plugging in @120V works fine unless we want to go somewhere after work that's a bit more of a trip.
Just examining options.

The big factor is how far they have to run wires from your panel to your plug. Also you need to have room on your panel to accept the new breaker, otherwise you will need a sub panel which adds expense. I’d budget about 1200 and maybe it will be less. I’d also say 240 is nicer than 120 if you end up driving more than you currently do, or if there’s no external way to charge in a hurry if you are ever particularly low.

Had a plug in hybrid for 5 years and just bought a fully electric truck. I bought a level 2 charger for my old house but have loved in my new place for 3 years and still haven't installed it. Never miss it. A 16 kwh battery (only 12.7 useable) only takes about 10 or so hours to fill vs 2 on a level 2, so maybe once or twice a month it would make a difference. You'd never see a return on the investment. I'll be installing mine again now that I have a big battery truck.
Cost wise, $500-1500 (don't buy crappy ones off Amazon) plus installing a 60 amp run of cable from charger location to panel plus breaker. Then a few grand for panel upgrade if your panel doesn't have room for a 60 amp breaker added.
Wow, finally an EV where the interior doesn't look like complete garbage. I might have to put this on my shortlist for a vehicle upgrade in 3-5 years
A shame, because the fake 'exhaust' on the Charger Scat Pack is, frankly, embarrassing.
The clip looks like the audio and video has a sync delay, but that's not it. That's just what happens when the exhaust noise is synthesized; your eyes and your ears don't agree on what's happening / should be happening.
I say: enough, already. Just lean into the weird spaceship noises like we wanted when we were kids.
Spoiler!

Was in Vancouver for a quick work trip on Tuesday - its crazy to see how many EVs are driving around.
You basically can't drive a block with seeing a tesla.
But, just in a short amount of driving, I saw:
Chevy Bolt (and possibly EV Blazer/equinox?)
Hummer EV
Hyundai (Kona, Ioniq 5 & 6)
Kia (EV6 & EV9)
Vinfast
Rivian
Toyota BZ4x
Mercedes EQe(I think)
Nissan Leaf
VW ID.4
Ford (MAch E & Lightning)
Likely some Volvo/ BMW / Audi (harder to spot)
Probably Polestar
possibly Fiskar?
