Oiler mouthpiece Frank Seravelli on the Fan960 this morning spouting that Pissy's contract ask is not going to be as high as everyone thinks it is, and that both him and Connor are looking at resigning for the full 8 years. If that is true then they are both truly idiots!!

If this is true, then they both are as stupid as they look.

Of course that’s the narrative right now and I bet Seravalli has absolutely heard that. Why would the pissy and mavi want to stir up locker room issues before what’s likely their last season together?
Right now the priority should be getting Connor as many points as possible, and making sure the video coach doesn’t get caught diddling rookies.

I seemingly trust Serravelli more than most around here, but he's a massive Oilers homer. I wouldn't take anything he says on this file in particular in good faith.

Plus it just doesn't make sense that this would be something anyone credible would say as a fact. If I'm the agent for either player, I read that and say "WTF". If I'm a player I'm saying "why is my team putting out there that I'm worth less than market".

Saying they are going to sign for less than people think is going to set people up for disappointment. In my mind 12.5 M would be a steal for Draisaitl and 16.5M would be a steal for McDavid.

They can discount all they want, Nurse’s contract pretty much negates any kind of “discount”.

There is zero chance Draisaitl signs for less than $13MM. His wife won't allow it, and the PA will be all over him.

I agree with most of what you said
But
Why would the PA care?
It’s not like it use to be, they are getting 50% of HRR anyway

I know hockey writers need something to talk about to justify their job in the offseason. But I just can't see both players taking a discount to stay. The NHL's salaries for top end talent have been lagging far behind their peers in other sports. Mostly because it's tied to the cap. But also because the top players haven't been signing max contracts. This is the first real opportunity for big name players to step up and max out their contracts for the betterment of star players salaries going forward. You have to believe their agents are pushing for it. Because the trickle down to all their other clients will be huge going forward.

Followed you right up until you said “trickle down will be huge”
No it won’t
If top players sign for more, there will be less for everyone else.
The players are splitting 50% of HRR. The share is limited

As a policy the PS dislikes players taking bargain contracts.

A slight discount is expected when getting that extra 8th year when the player is in their later 30s. That’s really the only leverage the Oilers have is that option to have an 8th year on an extension instead of getting only 7 years as a free agent.

Weird policy in a hard cap world
Assume the policy is successful
If every player shoots for the stars contract wise and succeeds, eventually many will have to take a deep discount

All the super star players have been taking discounts for years anyway. Back at the start of the cap era Tampa singed Richards and Lecav for cap max. Iginla and others were making $7 million. That was 18% of the cap.
A contract at 18% today would be $15.8 million.
Draisaitl could sign for $15 million and team friendly reporters could still call it a "discount".
The only result of their discounts is the second tier guys get to sign massively overvalued contracts until they are 40 every free agency.
