I'm looking at it more from the perspective of Acey noting that hey, this would be a good time to sink some cash into renovating or replacing parts of the failed portion of the facility, such that there is an actual opportunity here for us to wind up with better airport infrastructure. I'm sure in the short term things are fine because they just expanded the aiport's footprint to the tune of something like 30 football fields' worth of real estate but the reason they did that was because there was an assumption that given growing usage, we actually would NEED that extra space. Has that changed? Because if not it seems like we're going to have to make that capital investment at some point anyway. Probably cheaper now than patching the thing up. So I was just curious whose pocket that would have to come out of.

All the newly constructed gates are international/transborder gates and we need them all currently, forget the future... pretty much max capacity on the busiest days (Sun/Thurs) as international/US flight counts and passenger counts have gone up. A lot of the new gates can do double duty and either arrive or depart domestic, and since the new terminal is a lot nicer, a lot of flights end up over there anyway... so it's created a surplus on the domestic side especially since domestic travel is either flat or slightly down while overall numbers are up.
Who pays for it? You do with parking fees here, your $35 improvement fee tacked onto airfare on a YYC-originating itinerary, and the airlines pay for it with landing fees, terminal fees, rent, etc.
Federal and provincial gov't pay for the rest.
$200 million runway reconstruction is currently underway... only $60M of it is federal money and YYC pays the rest.

I know you're half joking but I'll just say that given that the airport has enough gates to continue operating, I'm not sure there's any reason to be annoyed with the airport aside from not being quicker at getting people out of Concourse B when the ceiling became a waterfall, but those procedures are being reviewed.
WestJet isn't doing a stellar job at rebooking people, managing the cancellations and communication... but as I said earlier they were already short planes coming into summer and now are in a world of hurt with a bunch down with hail damage. They were supposed to get 8 new planes this year from Boeing, but because Boeing is a gongshow they have gotten only one.
So I guess in order of who one should be most annoyed at it's probably
a) mother nature
b) WestJet customer service
c) Boeing
d) YYC for not having a massive inflatable dome to cover the entire terminal area during hail events
We waited forever for WJ customer service (stuck in Van) but when we did get them they stepped up. Booked on replacement AC flight, then rebooked when a better WJ flight came up.

Now on to checking the park and jet car.
I was just looking at it looks like a lot more flights are being cancelled.

The masses always get bent about the 'heat wave' and whine about needing AC when we have our annual 7-14 day run of 30ish weather - and then it's over. Not a single day is forecasted to hit above 26 through the last week of the month and by that time Calgary is fully entering Fall mode.
I at least applaud that the city is waiting until the end of the month to pull the cord on water again when it's actually fully cooled down, but it is probably only because nobody bothered to proactively source necessary materials in time to do it earlier lol.
Get used to it people...we are going to be dealing with on/off water restrictions for the next 2-3 years while this dumpster fire is repaired and eventually fully remedied. Get ready for the property tax burden from hell too - green line, water line, event center.....the increases that have been coming the last few years are going to look like child's play comparatively.
Because the necessary supplies are just available in every Amazon warehouse or something...

How far into the future will WJ flights be effected?
Any best guesses? Can they PDR the planes in a few weeks haha
Just landed in Calgary. No B gates open, that alone affects WJ flights. There's only so many gates and rivals would have to cooperate. I imagine all damages planes will have to be thoroughly tested.
Our car at park & jet had damage, but no shattered windows (we saw a few).

I'm scared to ask but how long was "forever"? Been on hold for 2 hours since we found out our Sat morning flight to Comox has been cancelled and pushed to Monday at 930 PM .
Yeah WestJet was ready to use ground loading gates and/or remote stands if need be, the terminal closure won't stop them. It's the lack of planes that is causing this.
There was still minor fallout and a few cancellations a day from the AME strike so this is just terrible timing
- Still too soon to say what Ukraine has in mind in Kursk exactly, but clearly bigger than just a raid
- Ukraine's current strategy of superior attrition is based on them being on the defense, but the Russian summer offensive was probably starting to wind down. By taking land that Russia has to try and take back, Ukraine can force them to keep attacking, which keeps the attrition rates favorable to Ukraine.

We were on hold pretty much overnight on the regular line. My wife slept (sort of) with the phone by her head. The woman who answered then had to be on hold with us for a couple hours while she tried to book us on an AC flight.
But then the next day I phoned the gold members line (which was not available the night before) and got through within an hour and they performed admirably. Once you get through its not too bad with any of them.
