Flyers sign Travis Konecny to 8 year extension worth $70 million
https://www.nhl.com/flyers/news/flye...year-extension
Quote:
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today they have extended forward Travis Konecny to an eight-year contract worth an average annual value (AAV) of $8.75 million beginning with the 2025-26 season, according to General Manager Daniel Bričre.
"Travis Konecny is an integral part of the fabric of our team and we are thrilled to have him under contract for the long-term," said Bričre. "Travis has grown into a significant leader on our team and he truly embodies what it means to be a Flyer. His work-ethic, combined with his tenacity and talent makes him a central figure for what we are building towards, and his determination for our future success speaks volumes about his commitment to our team and city."
“I couldn’t be happier to sign again with the Flyers,” said Konecny. “There’s such a bright and exciting future with this team and I can’t wait to be a part of it for the next nine years and see what we will accomplish. I can’t thank all my teammates and staff members enough because this opportunity wouldn’t be possible without each and every one of them along the way. I can’t wait to get back to Philly in front of the best fans in the world and I look forward to another great season!
Konecny, 27 (3/11/1997), tallied 68 points (33g-35a) in 76 games with the Flyers during the 2023-24 season. He led the team in goals, points, shorthanded goals (6) and game-winning goals (5). He also led the NHL in shorthanded goals and ranked tied for second in shorthanded points (7).
Among his accomplishments this season, Konecny skated in his 500th NHL game on Nov. 2 vs. Los Angeles, tallied his 200th NHL assist on Dec. 15 vs. Detroit and recorded his 400th NHL point on April 13 vs. New Jersey. He represented the Flyers at the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend, which was his second NHL All-Star appearance (2020). In addition, Konecny was the recipient of the Bobby Clarke Trophy as the team’s Most Valuable Player and won the Toyota Cup, accumulating the most points as “Stars of the Game” at the conclusion of this past season.

Heard he was earlier asking for 10. He has yet to actually hit 70 points, although I believe last 2 seasons he could have if he played full season.

Just under a point a game over the last 2 years, important part of their team - sounds about right.

One of my favourite non-Flames players in the league. He is a pretty intense player who seems to come up clutch.

I don't hate it - but think it shows that the contract valuations are going up.
Konency has one PPG season (in 60 games), and has averaged 69 points and 30 goals per 82 games over the last three seasons...and he got $8.75M x 8M from 28-35 years old as a winger.
Think if he got anything over $7M in the past it would have been called a big overpay...but in a rising cap world the number actually works...although I do doubt it will age well still for the last 3-4 years of the contract.

He's their best player and carries that team offensively and even on the PK as he has 9 short handed goals in the past two seasons. He's well worth the money to the Flyers.

Not sure if he is a power type winger because I have hardly noticed in him in games we have played them, but if that's the type of game he plays those players don't age well.

Closest recent comparable is probably Guentzel's deal.
Konecny is 2.5 years younger, which means he's 1.5 years younger at the start of the contract, but is also 8 years instead of 7.
Guentzel got 7 x $9 for ages 30-36.
Konecny got 8 x $8.75 for ages 28-35.
Guentzel averages 86 points and 39 goals per 82 games the past 3 seasons.
Konecny averages 69 points and 30 goals per 82 games the past 3 seasons.
Guentzel obviously also had much more help playing with Crosby/Malkin, compared to Konecny playing with a revolving door of characters.

Not that the players are directly comparable, but I'm very happy with Conroys work on the Sharangovich extension. I think that's going to look like a steal in the coming years.

Another 8 year deal. This just doesn't happen in the other major sports.
The NBA CBA stipulates a maximum term of 5 years.
The NFL has no max term, however extremely rare for anything longer than 5 years.
MLB has no max term and looks like there are about 30 contracts in the league that are 8 years or longer. Many of those are huge stars or very young players.
NHL teams just can't help themselves. It's an equal playing field and should reward those teams that in the long run are best able to manage their cap. But personally I'd prefer shorter term contracts so that bad contracts from previous GM's don't hang penalize you for so long.

I think the NBA is now 4 years and own player supermax is 5 years. They also have the player and team options.
I think the same in the NHL works 4/5 instead of the 7/8.
All leagues still have rookie scales as well just like the NHL, and restricted free agency.

If there is another work stoppage, the length of contracts and size of signing bonuses will come up as two of the bigger issues for the owners. Just not sure if it's a big enough issue for them to miss part of the season.

It is. It was the hill they would die on last time, but they got the 50/50 split and term limits at 7/8.
NBA also has a 51/49 split, but have to spend 90%.
Its 53/47 in the NFL for the owners as well.

Agree. 8 year contracts for hockey players are really long. Feels like we are going down a path where every team will have a few of them.
It's a hard cap, so it just squeezes money that could be available for younger players.
