This is his big chance. The first time in his career where he's in a situation to grab a starting role and if he doesn't rise the the challenge, then very likely his last big chance.

My memory might not be accurate, but I can't list a goalie off the top of my head that had a good year right after major hip surgery.

Yeah it's kind of like ACL injuries in football where after surgery it usually takes a WR a full season just to get the twitch and speed back if it ever comes back as some athletes are never the same. Gillies never fully recovered after his hip surgeries.

Didn't Brodeur have a good year after a major hip surgery? Or maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

Korpisalo was .877 save% in 21-22, had hip surgery and went to .913 in Columbus and .927 in LA for 22-23.

Then fell back to .855 on Ottawa last year.

I'm happy For him but in no way is he taking the starters job from Wolf . Yeah I want him to push Wolf for that position for sure but I just don't see it.
I hope one of the other goalies we have cooking on the Wranglers and elsewhere makes a push for the #2 spot .
Our upcoming D and our goalies seem to be a bright spot do they not?

I would think the severity of the injury and subsequent surgery are major factors with how the recovery works. Vladar did play through it and only wss shut down after the team sold off. So it would seem that it was not a major event that rendered him unable to play. So recovery from this type of injury likely has a lot more variation than say a blown Achilles tendon.

I'm not sure I'd call our goalies a bright spot.

Wold certainly has potential, but is largely untested at the NHL level.

Vladar appears to be a career back up type, although hopefully his last two dismal seasons were injury related.

The balance are likely just minor leaguers, although goalies can always surprise and come out of no where.

Defenseman do look like we have lots of options in the minors and some with big potential.

Yeah Zarubin, Yegorov, and Sergeev are "interesting" but I don't really see any of them coming out of nowhere to win a spot this year.

Sergeev has had okay NCAA seasons...but actually transferred from UCONN to Penn State because I think he fell out with the coach.

Yegorov had pretty good stats for an 18 year old in the MHL but is probably a couple years from coming over.

Zarubin is actually only 21 days younger than Yegorov who was very young for his draft year. He had an unreal season in the MHL with a .944...but probably a couple years from coming over too.

Getting beaten high as much as he did as a 6'6 goalie means your going down either too early and or making yourself go too low.

He had every opportunity two years ago to prove himself a starter when Markstrom was still suffering (all season) from his Game 1 Oilers loss, and Vladar didn't fare much better, stats wise or otherwise.

Look. The Flames have been a wildly inconsistent team defensively for the past few years

Vladar was the exact opposite of sheltered, and acquitted himself fine, certainly by W/L

You'll notice the same trend with the KHL too where most goalies sport a really high sv%. It must be something to do with the bigger ice surface...more time and space for players to recover from defensive gaffes, higher utilization of defensive systems, more shots from further away from the net, etc.
