I'm a fan of their podcast to the point I chose to become an advertiser. I find all this compensation discussion interesting, I've never though about how much they earn as an income from the podcast but I'm going to assume it's enough to make the model sustainable and to call it a hobby is a disservice to how much work is put into the show. I think the 'we're just 3 morons, can't believe you guys listen to us' is a schtick that they have succeeded in. These guys are pros and excellent at what they do.
The negativity toward the ad reads they do is always funny to me. The same people who say we're so happy to have them on air, are the same that complain they have to do ad reads.... how else would they be on air? lol
At least this form, it's mostly organic, casual and not 5 minutes of radio ads. You can always fast forward too. I think the difference is unless it's a giant corporate advertiser, they actually have personal experience or relationships with their advertisers. Had a guy tell me he recognizes the name of my store from BB, but said would never shop with any of the advertisers because it's so annoying. Blew my mind... probably an oiler fan.
The ad reads are working because my brain just went...wait...that is THE Justin from Vena Nova. I try to support their advertisers when I can, despite living up here.

There is no question that Derek is way too postive about the Flames. It is really hard to listen to. I will also add that Pat is very realistic with his evaluation of Flames and its players.

Boomer and Pinder interviewed Rick Ball as part of their Summer programming and posted the video today:

What a great interview that was. Well worth the watch. Going to miss Rick more than any departing player the past few seasons, that's for sure. I can't wait until the Flames play the Hawks. Will be tuning into the Hawk's broadcasts each time, that's for sure.

Sounds like Rogers dragging their feet thinking up ways to save a few nickles to do another Oiler themed commercial opened the door for Chicago to make a move. Good for Rick, hopefully they can get him on as a guest occasionally now as Rogers pettiness should no longer be an issue. Whoever replaces him will have tough shoes to fill and you know Rogers will do it on the cheap.

Watch them simulcast the radio call on to the television feed

Ball was awesome, especially after it seemed a bit lacking here in Calgary the years before then. He made the Flames more fun to watch IMO. Also funny how he basically started here with the new core, and now that the core is gone, so is he.
I will expect that whomever is picked to take over next season won't be as good. Hopefully it won't be someone awful. I wonder if Singh ends up taking over full-time. I think it is a step down from Ball, but then again I think Ball was absolutely phenomenal. Singh probably doesn't have Ball's experience, and I am sure there would he would find his way just fine. Any leaks to potential candidates yet?
Do we know yet if Hrudey will still be on duty, or will he do only the panel? I like Greg Millen, so hopefully if Hrudey is moving on, Millen becomes the full-time colour guy.
It really sucks that Ball is leaving.
Over the years, it has been feast or famine for the Flames in this area. From teams like Whalen + Bowman, to.. I won't name names. Even Loubo - I found him a bit difficult to listen to at first, though I always appreciated his insight. When I finally got used to him and really enjoyed his calls, they canned him.
Whomever is hired, I will keep an open mind and give that person a lot of rope to improve if I don't happen to like him (or her) right away. Either way, Ball will be missed greatly.
While making the radio people work from home off the other teams camera feed.
I would actually see it go the other way, that they just use the TV broadcast over the radio.
I get it that the radio crew lost a big berk, but if I am being honest when listening to it on the radio, I would have no idea they were not in the stadium calling the game live if Derek wasn't telling me.
Flames fans were spoiled with Rick as our pbp guy. National level quality broadcaster doing regional games. Compare him to the bush league Oilers or Vancouver broadcasts, and you'll quickly realize how much of a treat it was having Ball as our pbp guy.

Dear God, if next season was Singh and Hrudey I would watch every away broadcast or mute every game. That would be just horrible.

Maybe we'll get lucky and land someone like Ball was when he joined the Flames crew back then. Not that well known nationally, and eventually becomes one of the best.
This week is a two part Cory Sarich interview. Part one dropped today.
