Kinda gotta agree with the Mayor on this one.

Thanks but I love what I do, I have done a job where I can honestly the say the world is a tiny bit better because of some of the things I've done, as I approach geezerhood and watch friends question whether their life was worthwhile that is priceless

My daughter keeps saying 'when you going to retire dad?' mostly so she can move into the basement (or move me in there more likely!!) but I would miss working with young men, teaching them how to make a ragu sauce one day and how a man is responsible for making sure a girl (especially if she's drunk or high) gets home safe at night, it's a privilege to have that responsibility

I can and have, done the latter, but man...I cant make a Ragu sauce to save my life.

Put me at gunpoint and tell me to make a Ragu sauce? I'd tell you to quit wasting our time and pull the trigger.

well of the two the later is defiantly more important but the ability to cook is a huge positive for a foster parent, I've had more than a few kids choose to go along with my 'dumbass rules' because I make a good meal

Good for you! (and I dont mean that sarcastically)

I'm just a very mediocre cook.

Went for lunch down by Oppenheimer Park yesterday. Oh man, what a state. One thing that I don't think I have ever noticed before was how badly swollen their extremities are. Young people that do not appear to be over weight (opposite) have lower legs akin to the elephant man. One guys lower legs were bigger than his thighs by a large margin. I assume this has to do with heart, circulatory issues due to the drugs but don't really know. Their were a number of people like that.

It is such a sad state down there.

I initially read your post as, "at Oppenheimer Park" and was going to send help your way immediately! Yeah, I too don't have any idea why they get so swollen in those areas, because up top and in the face, they're bone thin as they don't eat often given how their hunger is suppressed the majority of their waking hours since they are high.

I work in Burnaby by SFU. A few weeks ago at the skytrain station there was a guy (clearly a drug user) hunched over on one of the benches with the aforementioned extremities, in addition to what I can only describe as some sort of flesh eating/rotting condition on both of his shins. It was disgusting. Not sure what the affliction is but I'd be shocked if the guy has legs for much longer.

I believe the fleshy ulcer wounds are usually due to Xylazine, because we really needed to cut fentanyl with more junk. Fair warning though, if anyone looks up pictures of Xylazine wounds you better have a strong stomach. I’ve seen one guy in Calgary who almost looks like his forearms are going to just fall off at any given moment.

When you inject drugs, often dirty drugs with dirty needles, you get all sorts of blood, artery, and vein infections and blood clots. Blood pools in your lower extremities, and that's where you can get a buildup of poisoned blood.

A major cause is also likely Edema (buildup of fluids) caused by liver issues, such as Hepatitis C. The Hep C rate among intravenous users on the DTES is ridiculously high, even though it's largely curable now.

The cost of Hep C drugs for a severe case is close to $100k. When the drug initially came out, they weren't providing it universally to people. They would do a cost benefit analysis, based on what they thought your odds of survival from other risk factors were. If they thought you were going to die of an overdose in a year, you didn't qualify.

I think they've changed that now to make it available to everyone, but the medicine requires some pretty strict compliance to be effective, and it takes several months of consistent use to cure someone.

Advanced Hep C and HIV both cause large blistering and ulcer like wounds. If it's isolated to the extremities and lower legs, it's probably Hep C.

There's some nasty pics of advanced Hep C here:

I know Mackenzie Room is good and all, but I would have lost my appetite pretty quick.

Huh crazy. Those wounds look very similar to the ones described in various places from Xylazine use, nasty stuff.

This site doesn’t have any photos but describes the sores:

“These wounds are presenting atypically, tending to be on legs and arms (sometimes away from the site of injection) and appear to worsen more quickly than other skin wounds”

https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/12044.pdf

Edit: I should say I’m not discrediting anything you’ve posted, I’m certainly not a doctor and was not about to get close enough to distinguish between Hep C, HIV and or drug use lol.

MacKenzie Room, Ask for Luigi, and St. Lawrence are all Michelin rated restaurants within a couple of blocks of Oppenheimer. If you ever needed to go to a place that emphasizes the have and have not dynamics of Vancouver, it's right there.

That's my neck of the woods. Haven't seen much around there but not really looking either. Do not make it down to the train station very often and usually only go as far as Dageraad Brewing. I like the sense of seclusion around there although it is probably just in my mind.

Yes, the people I saw also had open wounds and a lot of discolouration on the shins and calf. It was, gross to say the least.

The Xylacine ones look a lot nastier. The flesh rots off in large chunks. So sad. I just can't imagine being willing to ignore a festering wound just to get high.

I was actually at Belgard Kitchen on Dunleavy. Cool spot. My cup of tea anyways. I cannot bring myself to go to the MacKenzie Room. No idea why just not on my radar. Ask Luigi's is awesome though, love that place. Never heard of St. Lawerence. Will have to look that one up.

St. Lawrence is French Canadian food. Been a couple of times. It's got similar vibes to Ask Luigi, in that it's kind of casual fine dining. I've never been to the MacKenzie Room either. But Belgard kitchen was good.

The park itself wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Now, I didn't go for a stroll in it but there were people there using it, playing basketball, throwing a frisbee and i didn't really see an "encampment" like in the past. The homeless seemed to be on the sidewalks and alleys more than the park. Maybe that changes at night.

I do feel for businesses around there though. Tough thing to ask your employees to deal with that all the time.

I sorta remember there being an encampment that had to be cleaned up after a bunch of crime, assaults, sex assaults, fires, etc. It was a few years back?

You can probably see it from the historical pictures from google maps/streetview.
