Because it needs to be a constant. Why should it get swept under the rug just because the team is in a rebuild? This is the worst contract that has been signed in the NHL. If it was still the Nurse contract nobody wants thats being talked about nobody would take issue.

Why does it need to be a constant if there are no real new thoughts

I also remember everyone laughing about the Lucic contract when he was on Edmonton and then spinning it into a positive after the trade.
We went from that straight to this. No more bad contracts, please! I don’t care how much the cap is going up. It is easy to waste money on one-year deals to hit the salary floor if you ever need to.

lol now I have to know what a widely known contract for a player who is going to be here for 7 years getting “swept under the rug” looks like to you.
What are they going to do, pretend he only makes $2M and hope we don’t notice?

For sure, they actively seek out the opportunity to sign bad contracts. Happens all the time, but because we asked for them not to now they won’t.

Treliving did. Conroy certainly seems to understand the concept of the existence of an age curve.

Swept under the rug means people who claim there’s nothing to discuss and to stop bringing it up. If they don’t want to read or talk about it, why enter the thread?

So Treliving actively sought out bad contracts… why? to gain draft capital in return? because he wanted to sewer his team and make himself look stupid?
There are pretty limited examples of teams actually perusing bad contracts. And, funny enough, it seems like Conroy is the one willing to be involved in them, for the right price.

Awfully easy to do in year 1 of a rebuild. Think your comparison would be better suited in about 5 years when the Flames are a bit more serious about putting a winning team together. If you don’t think that, at some point, Conroy isn’t going to have a ‘bad’ contract or two under his belt, I think you’ll be mistaken.

His 2 stanley cups are plugging his ears, he can't hear you.
Sutter is an all time great and coached a game that won 2 cups in last 12 years. His system worked.

At least he did rebuild instead of listening to people here clamoring for Duclair, Necas, Kadri, Taylor Hall (I know some of these phases were before his time.)
As a Flames fan I hope I’m not mistaken. There are some teams in this league that have no bad contracts and I’d prefer to join that club. Leaves a lot of options open.

Treliving gave them out like candy on Halloween night. Apologies for the ambiguity of my truncated wording; I didn’t mean to suggest that he actively sought them out. He clearly does not understand age curves - Neal, Huberdeau, Kadri in Calgary. Tanev in Toronto. For what, to get everyone on Sportsnet talking about him for a week?
Posts 1094, 1096, 1109, among others. The thread is about Huberdeau’s contract, so I can’t imagine why anyone who has no interest reading or discussing the matter would be in here telling us there’s nothing to see here.

Haha my expertise is contracts - drafting them, executing them and managing them. There is always a way out. I didn’t say void, I said terminate. What I’ve learned after decades in industry is that where there is a will, there is a way.
In Huberdeau’s case I understand there is probably no will. But trust me, there is a way.

The point I’m making is that basically nobody seeks them out (unless they’re getting something good in return), so saying “no more bad contracts!” is silly. The cap going up and needing to hit the floor has nothing to do with bad contracts. No GM sets out to sign a contract he thinks is bad. Conroy might have already signed a bad contract. Who knows?
Who says those people have no interest? Maybe you’re just not generating an interesting enough conversation about the topic? That’d make sense, since it is pretty limited and we’re two years in since it’s signed. I definitely don’t think they’re instructing you not to talk about it.
You have to admit it’s pretty silly to suggest it needs to be discussed “constantly.” Like, what do you guys think happens if you don’t have the same circular, pointless conversation where nobody says anything new for the next 7 years? What’s the actual consequence for people just not discussing something when there’s nothing new to discuss?

Sure, you’d have to have malevolent ambitions toward your own franchise to intentionally do something like that. So it’s either that (quite unlikely), or pure ignorance of reality.
There’s clearly a difference between assuming a bad contract for a price and actually giving one out.
It was memphusk who said we should constantly talk about it, not me. Though if we are constantly talking about it, it won’t do any harm if anyone in the decision making realm of the Flames knows that we are. I hope they feel pressure to never give a max term contract to a 30-year-old again.
I didn’t put the article on the New York Times website and I didn’t link it here either. I’m commenting on a remarkably horrible contract that we have to deal with.

Such as?
I know you’re probably fairly accurate when you look league wide, but, of all the competitive teams that should make the playoffs, I’d bet you can find a bad contract or two on those teams.
TB just let a franchise icon walk (for NOTHING no less!!!!thought it was only the Flames that did that, but I digress) to avoid signing a deal they thought they would regret. Perhaps Tampa Bay, considered one of the most attractive places to play can get away with it but I think it’s fair to say Conroy won’t have that wind behind his sails.

Can we extend his contract for another 8 years? Because this is going so well!!
Maybe instead of signing half of Eastern Europe we should be looking at the French?

Utah and Carolina come to mind. You can argue about Kotkaniemi. Seattle was, and blew it this summer. Los Angeles. Doughty is overpaid but at least approaches zero value. San Jose before Toffoli, who shouldn’t impact their plan too much. Vlasic was a disaster but they aren’t doing anything in the next 2 years anyway. If Huberdeau had 2 years left no one would care.
There is nothing wrong with letting players walk away. For example if Gaudreau was a free agent in the 2021 summer, would you be mad if Calgary signed him to 1x$6.75M? Probably not. That’s the same thing as having an expiring deal. The past is immaterial.

Jonathan Huberdeau is literally the reason this team has been forced into rebuilding.
Maybe just say ‘thank you’.
