Tkachuk would've probably performed alright if kept at the time. He sulked for a couple years which I assume he wasn't happy about something during that time. Would he have wanted to stay if things went south? Who knows. But we'd have been better off with a lengthy contract with lousy Tkachuk, than a lengthy contract with an aging Huberdeau.

I say this over and over, and am too lazy to go and find the posters, but a whole bunch of people here said the trade was a failure UNLESS Huberdeau signed long term.

That is 100% accurate. Several people were saying this.
Let’s also remember the popular question around the Flames headed into the season after the trade was ‘are the Flames better now?’ That wasn’t just coming from Calgary, it was coming from many who cover the sport.
Markstrom having a brutal year and Sutter’s antics sewered the season. But, Treliving’s fault, right?

One guy from the Athletic making an article stating it hardly makes it "official". It's just another opinion.
I'd still take Huberdeau's contract over Nurse's and a lazy and selfish Dubios for instance.

Wiuld you trade Huberdeau, Weegar and a first for Tkachuk?
Yes but mainly because of the Huberdeau contract...its not like the Flames would be any better

Even if it is. Who cares about a ranking? It's clickbait.

I contend that Bill Zito knew he was going to have to pay 10.5M to a guy he also knew wasn't a playoff performer. So essentially, Zito knew he was losing Weegar, but gaining not having to pay Huberdeau (or having to trade him before the next deadline) in that trade.
So, from Zito's perspective, "yes but mainly because of the Huberdeau contract" is what happened (in my mind).

He wouldn't have had to pay that much
I'm not getting into the playoff performer stuff since they wouldn't have gone anywhere if Bob didn't turn his career around but that debate has been done to death

Zito 100% didn't want to pay Huberdeau his money, the trade speaks for itself. The trade was considered a win by everyone at the time for the Flames.
Zito did an interview a while ago which hit the nail in the head where he said that sometimes you have to "lose" the trade if you believe the end result is better for your team. I can't help but think he was talking about this trade.

I personally never thought the Panthers lost on that deal even from the moment it was made. It was a smart hockey move.
Looking at their cap situation, it was pretty likely that they wouldn't be able to keep both Weegar and Huberdeau after the following season. Tkachuk being younger and a player with similar offensive upside and just generally a more intense player, was well worth the price they paid. The alternative would have likely been to re-sign an older Huberdeau to the same money they signed Tkachuk for, and then let Weegar walk after the year anyway. So really, in the trade they gave up one year of service of Weegar potentially 9 years of a mostly post peak Huberdeau, for 8 years of Tkachuk, almost all peak years. And all it took to sweeten the pot was a (likely) late 1st rounder and average prospect in Schwindt.
There was no doubt in my mind that Florida was getting back the best player in the trade when you consider the type of player he is and his age. Although I have to admit that Weegar helps alleviate the pain.

Nurse making more than Makar and only sitting at #9 on this list makes me think it may not be entirely accurate.

You certainly seem to know who to blame.

lol "TOfan" cope
It was Tre's fault they were in that position with Tkachuk in the first place.

Flames have the most cap space in the entire NHL

It was? Tkachuk himself had nothing to do with it? Tkachuk wanted out. Some people can’t seem to grasp that.

‘Ruined’? That’s a little dramatic. Try and keep a lid on it there, friend.
Before heading into his final season as a Flame, it was not unusual to read many posters on here say that the Flames should blow it up and rebuild. That went on for years. Well, turns out they got what they wanted.
Enjoy the ‘process’. Oh, right, can’t use that word because Treliving would sometimes use it. Same as many other professional and amateur coaches executives across the continent in various sports.

Did you ever think why Tkachuk wanted out?
Could it be that his Dad and himself saw how the roster was constucted by the GM and thought we better get off this sinking ship.

Tkachuk had a very narrow list of teams he would go to. They all weren't necessarily winners. He clearly wanted to go to an American city with low taxes and low Covid restrictions.
He was likely pissed off at the franchise for not handing him the captaincy, or at least a large leadership role, either. From his point of view that likely destroyed a lot of the two-way loyalty. I doubt Tkachuk and Sutter were best friends either.
From all accounts the double wammy of Sutter in the day and Covid restrictions in the off time was a horrible way to live.
I don't think there were that many issues with roster construction. From all accounts, Tkachuk got along with many players. He continues to hang out with some of them. As far as roster construction, Gaudreau leaving was likely a major factor. Tkachuk's numbers were likely to suffer not playing with Gaudreau, and he knew that.
If Gaudreau stays, Tkachuk is given a big contract and captaincy in Calgary, and Covid doesn't happen, Tkachuk is a life long Calgary Flame.

I just read through too much of the thread. I just that unless you have a strong stomach to pass on it.
Way too many wrong statements by the vast majority of posters.
I think it's hard to criticize Treliving when the majority of posters were ready to erect a statute of him for the Huberdeau signing. I get it's his job to know the difference, but Huberdeau's fall from grace was unprecedented.
Lots of bad luck here.

The day Panthers won the cup Zito on the ice said he had to change his team from one that was all out offence to a defence first team. It was nothing to do with Huberdeau not being a playoff performer, it was his whole team. Before Tkachuk had his first playoff season in Florida he wasn't a "playoff performer" for Calgary either.
