I don't understand it either. Or registering as an independent. Why register at all then? Just be independent.
It's registering to vote, and declaring your party support is a part of that for some asinine reason. A "registered independent" is just someone who's registered to vote and declared "none" in their party affiliation.
Perhaps the Democrats will be worried about the bump this could give Trump and replace Biden?
Perhaps US citizens will be worried about s bump and vote in droves for whomever is on the Democrat ticket?
Perhaps it will all be forgotten by November?
Perhaps this will put Trump over the top?

What I truly can't believe about this, is the lack of security for a former President who is currently running for the position again. My cousin was attending Carnegie Mellon when Gore was running. VP Gore spoke across the street from my cousin's office. They had a containment tent so you couldn't see the car or anyone in a large section. There were snipers on every building.
Trump has no one watching a what 8-10 foot building 150m away? Makes no sense.

But back to the topic, I actually suspect this was orchestrated by Don Jr.! If the MAGA party were forced to select a replacement, he would be first in line, with Kimberly as veep nominee to get the disillusioned Democrat crowd (she was married to Newsom so she'll clearly moderate the extremists!).

It matters in states where they don’t have open primaries. The declaration in closed primary states determines which primary you can vote in.

My worry is that an incident like this can help Trump tap into the third of the country that usually never pays attention to politics.
Yeah, I am absolutely not a conspiracy theorist, but it certainly does appear secret service totally dropped the ball here.
I don't see how the Director survives this debacle. For a country that prides itself on being the world's greatest military superpower this is a screw up of colossal proportions.

If Trump roles with the democrats tried to kill me angle I think this actually hurts him. It further enshrines he is not living in reality. The problem is that there are enough Americans who share this belief to win against an uninspired Biden candidicy.

That's the thing.
There is a reason why Hollywood films with a patriotic themes always do well at the box office no matter how mediocre of bad the film really is. It pulls at the heart strings of many Americans and gets them off the couch. The images produced yesterday are likely to have a similar effect IMO. It doesn't matter how bad Trump is, surviving an assassination attempt will be portrayed as cool, and a lot of people just want to be with what is cool in that moment. It's not that hard to manipulate dumb people.
My hope is that with people's short attention span and how quickly the news cycles, that by November, the effect is diminished.
