Any reason to think this is more politically motivated along left/right lines than any of the other assassinations and attempted assassinations in the last 60 years? Disaffected and mentally unstable young men are responsible for pretty much all of the attacks, without any coherent political intent behind them.

Anyone trying to figure out a coherent political philosophy from an assassin is usually going to have a bad time. The guy was (seemingly) a 20 year old loser gun enthusiast who donated $15 to (or bought merch from) a progressive PAC when he was 17 and then registered as a Republican when he turned 18 right before the 2022 election, so nearly 2 years before the next primary.
The guy was probably just nuts with a mishmash of incoherent beleifs, but unfortunately crazy people can get semi-automatic guns very easily in the US.

Well, it has been a day. Hopefully Trump is over it by now and will continue to ignore gun control.

The obvious issue is that the good guys weren't allowed to bring their guns to the rally. If they had, they would have shot the guy first. If it is the best way to stop school shootings, then it should be the best way to stop assassinations.

The guy is not a Trump hater, he just hates ears, especially ears on the right because they don’t listen.

I read that his dad bought the gun, but the article wasn't clear if he bought it for his son or himself.
I think the odds of this changing gun culture in the US is about as close to zero as you can get.

The actual motivations of the shooter means nothing for how the right will react to this. Knives are out and they want their pound of flesh.

All ive seen so far is the left saying 'no place for violence' and 'speedy recovery' and the right blaming left for their rhetoric, saying Biden did this, blaming DEI and women (because the USSS has female agents), etc etc.
But sure...both sides

I'm seeing a lot of commentary like: - Sigh. They missed
- Bad shot too bad
- Wow! Can’t believe it took this long for someone to take a shot at him. Sounds like the wrong person died.
- Wow they missed oh fck
- That guy needs better aim.
This is all copy and pasted from facebook from 2 threads about Trump. So either you're lying or not looking. This #### is everywhere.

Ahhh my bad Cali. Obviously this guy loves the Republican party and Trump so much, he tried to blow his toque off.
Carry on, wayward sons.

The truth is, this certainly muddies the waters with motive. The fact he's a registered Republican should give people pause as this is actual evidence against left/progressive violence. We may never know what his motives were.

It's completely possible this guy was radicalized by the left.
It's completely possible this guy was radicalized by the never trumpers right.
It's also completely possible this guy had no political motivation whatsoever, saw a soft target and tried becoming famous.

You have no idea why he tried. Some establishment Republicans hate Trump. The Lincoln project being a great example. The way more likely scenario is that he is like the last few guys who shot a president and it’s for a completely nut bar reason.

It's America, nutjob with a gun isn't specific to any demographic or political affiliation. Could have been politically motivated, could be like Hinckley where he wanted to impress some celebrity crush, who knows. Bigger picture as we all know is America is full of angry people, guns, and a lack of mental health treatment. This isn't going to get better any time soon.

Does it really count as being shot if it can be patched up with Neosporin and a band aid? I know of elementary school kids who’ve survived worse.
