Not suggesting an offer sheet, but Holloway would be a great add. He’s young, has size, skates very well, and has a robust physical game. The Oilers have grossly mishandled him thus far, but at worst, he develops into an excellent two-way third liner like Coleman.
I think he’s got more in him though- enough to make it as a second-line winger. This is a kid who put up 35 points in 23 games in his D+1 year in the NCAA- even with a late September birthday, and playing with Caufield, that’s impressive.

This is likely due to a soft league collusion. Cost control is probably the most important factor in the NHL today, and an extensive use of the offer-sheet system would diminish that control.
Spiteful reprisals are another factor.
But the we know that no one will offer sheet these guys, because NHL GMs never* offer sheet RFAs. But that doesnt mean that they shouldnt

I would say offer sheets are just ineffective in general and that is why they are not used.

If you offer something even somewhat reasonable, the other team just matches.
So you have to offer a boat anchor contract plus give up compensation to do so.
That doesn't seem like an effective team building tool to me. In a league where cap efficiency is king, why would you use a tool to add a player that will be massively inefficient cap wise?

All right, I will stipulate that it could be $2.9 million. That's still a heavy overpay for Holloway or Broberg. Media reports suggest the Oilers will sign both of them combined for about that much.

If we did, Edmonton will get revenge on one of our budding young stars in a few years and it’ll screw us over worse. Not worth it.

They're going to do that anyway, they're already plotting to attack us in 2030. Or is this really an unwritten rule that matters?

Yes, the correct way to build a small market franchise is by finding value everywhere because you cannot get UFAs. If an RFA is worth more than the compensation given up and the other team might not be able to sign them at that price you offer sheet. Would be better if the Flames had their third round pick in this situation though.

All is moot if TheIronMaiden’s post about Holloway in the E=NG threat is true. He paints a picture of an egomaniac who is unliked in the locker room….

Are we running out of cap space? Is that the concern?

As a general argument, you wouldn't (or, you shouldn't).
However, if a situation arises where a player is actually worth the contract, and the only reason they're available is because the host team is the one in a cap crunch, and the acquisition cost is reasonable, then why not?
Blindly applying general rules to situations, without considering context, is no way to manage anything.

As much as I hate the Oilers, doesn’t the player still need to sign the offer sheet? Who’s to say they would want to leave a team that was two goals away from winning the cup… and if he did sign the offer, what kind of character does he have?
Seems like a bad idea to me.

If we don't spend it wisely we will be.
It doesn't really matter though, if you are looking at the contract amount that requires a 2nd rounder as compensation, then it's just whether he's worth that. With the Flames having a likely early 2nd round pick next year, I'd say he isn't worth that based on what he's done so far and the rumored character issues on top.
It's fun to screw the Oilers but let another team do it imo.

Based on what?
There are two situations where an offer sheet comes into play: either the host team doesn't want to pay them fair value, or another team wants to overpay.
And of course, the player has to want to sign.
If Edmonton wanted to seek revenge, and throw stupid money at one of our players - let them. But the chances that a situation like this arises (i.e. where the cost is small, the cap space is readily available, the compensation is low, and the player might actually be willing), is pretty rare.
In most other situations, they would simply be hurting themselves out of spite.

If another company offered you twice as much money to do the same job, would you take it? If so, would that reflect badly on your character?

I think the Oilers have been horrendous with Holloway's development. They're impatient as per usual.
But I do know that Holloway was a huge Flames fan and Oilers hater until he was drafted. Probably still is a Flames fan.

There are several reasons to not offer sheet Holloway, making the Oilers mad is at the bottom of the list.

How many times have we seen a player sign a big contract and flop? That can’t be easy for the player. So many factors in play other than making twice as much. I’d assume professional athletes want to win… and make a lot doing it lol

We should not offer sheet him.
We should cozy up to Edmonton and take him as part of a cap dump.
