No. They're not. They are almost all 'Heart & Soul' kind of people.
See: Backland, Mikael.
Its why they have Agents. Hockey players mostly just want to play hockey, but they need to be appropriately compensated. But once that compensation is agreed upon usually its just back to the business of playing hockey.
Some players will stay where they like to be and some will go wherever you pay them to go. They're still people.
The Tkachuks are different. They also have agents but they also understand the mechanisms of the sport. They have experience.
Like I said, Tkachuk was a pure Mercenary and if you want him to play for your team all you have to do is pay him. If you don't...he will leave for someone who will.

A pure mercenary would not play for a contender. Why play playoff hockey in the summer for free and increase the chances of getting hurt?

1. The Contender paid him to.
2. Its a low-tax Jurisdiction.
He's still coming out ahead.

Which is why I have so much respect for Mathews. The way he bets on himself and structures his contracts? That guy's career earnings are going to be huge.

Agree that Tre totally screwed the pooch with Tkachuk. But disagree Chucky would only go where he is paid the best. He wanted 5 or 6 years at what now would be a bargain after his elc and a chance to be captain of the Flames. When he realized the moron gm wasn't going to give him either he was out of here the earliest he could.

The GM doesnt determine who the Captain of the team is.
He does determine how much people get paid and for how long.
Treliving was an idiot.

Not true, the coach, the GM and ownership have a powwow to pick the captain.

For sure they do. Once you bring "cup winning experience" to the table, your future UFA contracts go up.

I'll have to take your word for it.

Giordano needs to take some blame too for his crappy captaining in his last year here.
What happens after he leaves? Chucky puts up 104 points....

I also got divorced after giordano left. What a terrible captain.
After backlund was named captain I had another kid with a new wife so named him Mikael...
Come on man that isn't connected at all.

Did you even watch hockey then? haha The "captains" called out Tkachuk for his antics after the whistle and did not want to back him up. It was pure crap and I said Tkachuk would have a career year after Giold left.
Go search "Muzzin puck flip" on here... lol

Sure but they abandoned him the rest of the season. Great captaining!
You also had idiots in here saying he lost it mentally, and that everything was living rent free in his head....
Yeah that didn't happen.

So what? It was four years ago, he was 22. It speaks volumes about the leadership at the time that they didn't rally around him. His antics lead him to back-to-back cup finals and a Cup win. Kid with that immense talent and you can't work with him instead of against him?
Tkachuk was back in Calgary last night at the Stampede, guy should've been a career Flames. Treliving is trash.

And yet when he decided he didn’t want to play for Calgary anymore, he named 5 teams he would play for, not 20. Which suggests he had more criteria than just money.
He also signed an 8 year contract that’s looking like a deal already. If he was just about the cash he’d have signed a shorter deal.

Rally around him? The game was over and half of them were off the ice. He threw a tantrum because the team lost and he was made to look silly.
His “antics” have been toned down a lot. And he’s the better for it. Did he throw any tantrums in the last couple years? He used to let the opposition and media dictate his play. He’d get the better of a rival like Doughty one game but the next game the same guy would play supper hard and have the last laugh. He’s way better now.
Tkachuk was never going to be a career Flame. That’s pretty obvious.
