On Flames defense, Oliver would have been playing top 4 minutes. Dunno if any other team could've given him that. Maybe he has mutli year deal in Sweden?

Mental health or not mental health, if a company paid you to perform 160 times in 2 years and you only showed up for 33, you will be labeled as unreliable, no matter what your excuse is.
No wonder teams (including the Flames) are hesitant to commit longer.

I heard that he is still not sure he wants to play in NHL because of what he is overcoming. Probably hard to make a decision

Maybe the dude just wants to play somewhere basically no one will recognize him and he can just cash the cheques.
That said - the guy was drafted in 2015. The same year as McDavid, Hanifan, Rasmus Andersson. No one thinks there is some magic Andersson breakout coming. Very very likely he is what he is at this point which is bottom pair defenseman who can play with top 4 if given a stellar partner. Not someone you give term to.

I'd label them as "sick," just like someone unable to work because of cancer treatment. I do think it's fair for the team to be hesitant about a longer term contract given what he showed in those 33 games and his age. He's late even for a late bloomer.

You can just feel his career trajectory from hereon out is going to go the Gustav Forsling / Sam Bennett route

I get that it sounds crass, But Monahan who was (is hurt) often was viewed as un reliable, so much so the team traded a 1st to move his money.

The caveat is that he keeps his head in the game. I sincerely hope he does because I think you're right.

Without context. Impossible to judge Shillys situation with a fair perspective. We don't know what he went through.
Also, let's not pretend like the Monahan thing wasn't a massive mistake. That was a last ditch grasp at anything by the outgoing GM who quit after making his summer moves.

So that we could possibly be strung out of another $6M of cap space while he goes home to figure things out again?

Can’t believe this topic is still at the top and that it is still a topic. So, a third pairing defenseman didn’t get what he wanted, walked and got replaced with another third pairing defenseman. What’s a big deal?

Pretty evident the player was a fan favorite. Seems like a big deal given his situation. And where the Flames are at.

He would have been second pairing for Calgary.

That 'third pairing defenseman" was half of an objectively top two pairing in the NHL the last time he played a full season, as Kylington-Tanev was trailing only the Makar-Toews pairing in most metrics.

What was his metrics without Tanev?

I dunno, but do you really want to die on the hill that Chris Tanev is some superstar who dragged a third pairing guy to the second best pairing in the league (which Tanev never accomplished even with Quinn Hughes or Noah Hanifin as his partner)?
https://thehockeywriters.com/nhls-be...rs-of-2021-22/
Man Tanev deserved the Norris over Makar if he did that

You know perfectly well that the Norris is always given to one of the top scoring defencemen.
Analytics had Tanev pegged as the best defensive defenceman in the NHL for a while. So, yeah, he definitely made Kylington much better. He's pretty much done that with every partner he had.
Are you sure an article in The Hockey Writers by ‘aspiring sportswriter’ Marko Zlomislic, which doesn't even rank the top defence pairings (Tanev-Kylington is the second one listed, but there are no numeric rankings) is the hill you want to die on?
The article listed Grzelcyk-MacAvoy first and Toews-Makar third, for heaven's sake.
