Let him get that from the Oil.

He disappeared in the Cup final and besides, not someone that the Flames need to have in their organization.

Calgary is already strapped with a ridiculous overpay for Huberdeau…

How do you weaponize it when there's 17 teams with $5M+ and 11 teams with $10M+ in cap space? The premium on taking contacts won't be all that much the next couple of years

Yeah I have a feeling Conroy knew July 1 and days prior was prime conditions for weaponizing that cap space, and came up mostly empty.

In on Zucker, Debrusk, Wennberg and others, and each of those situations would’ve been a bit different dynamic, but all utilizing cap space, and all didn’t turn out.

I think a good chunk of those teams still have RFAs to sign

Just wait until the season goes along.
Look how bad Toronto and Vancouver needed cap space once they needed to bolster their team when they both wanted Zadorov.

On the other hand, if Treliving had signed Mantha, Lomberg, Bean, and Cooley, posters would be calling that ‘derpth̄’ too.

Way too early in the start of the off season to say he’s come up empty.

Teams that need to do something won’t necessarily panic and start unloading players at high costs. It’s a game of chicken and see who blinks first. It may not be acquiring picks with bad contracts, but may be able to buy for Pennies on the dollar. Would have liked us to pick up Joseph from Ottawa with the third they gave St. Louis but conroy must have some other things on the go. Might be trying to acquire a piece with higher upside than what has moved so far. And if not in the off season, maybe in season as others have mentioned.

There are quite a few key dates upcoming…they don’t have to be in the first 3 days!

Start of season when teams have to be cap compliant; throughout the season when injuries happen and reinforcements are needed; and of course both the planning for and then trade deadline.

Each period seems to have its own rhythm, but I’m confident that Conroy has it down. Any decent statistical analysis will also show why teams do salary dumps, and when to expect them.

This is probably the trade off that Conroy got management to agree to. We do a re-whatever, we lose on some ticket sales but i'll balance that up by not spending cap room.

It’s pretty normal for teams rebuilding with youth and through the draft to not spend to the cap simply because spending to the cap doesn’t help. If you’re putting young players out there on entry level contracts, then you won’t be a cap team.

If I have to give Conroy credit for one thing, it would finally convincing the owners that this was needed. I hope we weaponize some of that cap space, but not all of it because we need room for young players and a chance to get lottery picks for a couple of seasons. If saving hard cash helps then great.

I can't see the Blue Jackets making a trade to dump salary they have about $18M in space. 3 players I could see traded to clear up space are:

Nyquist, Gustav NAS $3,185,000
Nelson, Brock NYI $6,000,000 16 Team no Trade
Palmieri, Kyle NYI $5,000,000 16 Team no Trade

Yeah the most likely pure cap dumps at this point are likely:

Washington: Oshie (if he's not retired/LTIR)
Vegas: McNabb (also a potential LTIR candidate)
Edmonton: Kane, Ceci
Toronto: Kampf, Jarnkrok
Nashville: Glass
Vancouver: Poolman (LTIR Candidate)
Islanders: Pageau, Nelson, Palmieri (all have 16 team no trade lists)

Then there are the ones that are less "short term cap dumps" but more longer term deals teams might be looking to shed on young players.

Carolina: Kotkaniemi - 6 x $4.8M
Ottawa: Norris - 6 x $7.95M

I do wonder if the Flames would have interest in either of those young centers that fit the under 25 age range Conroy was looking for. Norris is riskier due to his injury history but has a higher potential, Kotkaniemi I would be perfectly fine with on that deal even if he plateaus as a 40 point guy.

Nelson is still a hell of a hockey player, I don't see him or Nyquist as cap dumps at all personally.

I'd take Norris if they retain, but I doubt there's interest in that by the Sens.

Not that we need the cap room, I just don't see him as an $8mil player, so it'd be tough to flip him if we ever decided to.

But adding another C in that age range makes a lot of sense as a stop gap until our current & upcoming additional prospects are ready for big minutes years down the road. If Norris was ~ok~, and slid down to a 3rd line C role by the time we had shiny new toys stepping in in 3-5yrs, with the cap approaching or over $100mil then I don't think we'd really care, especially if he was only say $6mil.

Or he ends up on LTIR/retiring early because he can't stay healthy.

If we can get him for cheap, I don't think there's much downside, not like he's blocking the door to someone else or handcuffing us cap-wise with the amount of space we have this year and the next handful of years too.

You could maybe get them to retain $1M...which at $6.95M x 6 years would probably be a fine contract as long as he could stay healthy. Risk is he can't stay healthy.

Of those two centers I'd prefer taking a Flyer on Kotkaniemi.

Bigger, younger, cheaper, more durable, and better suited to a 3rd line role if it ever came to that.
