Toronto and the GTA is approx 4 times the size of Calgary. Would it require 8 years, $20 million in spending to rebrand as "Toronto: Think Big! Think Canada! With a branding strategy of downtown Toronto and the CN Tower and the Maple Leafs?

It's ok to admit the taxpayers got taken for a ride on this deal, it's apparent. We see it everywhere. Anybody remember that garbage art project near Winsport? When it came to fruition it was a gong show, they tried to pass it off as some Indigenous art for the historical area until the local tributes told them to pound sand with that lie.
It’s kind of what you want though.

Anyway, it got turned into a gong show cause the usual idiots riled up the usual lemmings and made it a gong show. Guaranteed it would have been no big deal if the whole “save calgary” and Rick Bell brigades didn’t flip their lids.

No no, this is a branding agency that would come back and charge an "wing and a leg" so to speak for Swiss Chalet to show off chicken.

As for your rebranding, that level of work is effectively what we got for work.

Says the guy with zero government, corporate, or leadership experience.

It’s also OK to admit you don’t know what you’re talking about. You don’t have to make up stories about fraud and people getting taken for a ride just because this is above your pay grade and far beyond your expertise.

Sure, I’ll humour you. Let’s pretend you are in charge of this project.

To make it easy, we’ll just have you put an estimate together. You get to decide who the stakeholders are, who your team is, etc.

So, go for it.

What timeline are you proposing? How much for the work itself, and what kind of time are you building out for reviews, stakeholder engagement, etc.?
What’s the budget, and within that, what are you budgeting for each service group?
How many people are on the project and what mix of seniority do you have?

You know better, so let’s see how much better you know.

It's fun watching armchair marketers in this thread provide their opinions on rebranding a city with their perfect and impenetrable altruism and foresight, made even more incredible by their uncanny knowledge of the design process and precise level of required stakeholder engagement.

People made big time bank on this here deal for what is an obvious small change.

This is on top of the news that the city probably needs a year or more to figure what happened with the water main break. A year? What is the likelihood that it was a lack of maintenance, monitoring and a significantly reduced lifespan than expected? A recommendation to check surrounding water mains in Calgary using similar materials and risk? Probably tell us how engaged with global experts, talked to hundreds of people and that the review cost millions in expenses.

Reminds me of how Mcdonald's tried to tell us their head chef in Toronto needed 2 years to create a Chicken Big Mac sandwich.

NASA put a man on the moon in 8 years and when things hit the fan with a few missions, had answers and solutions in a matter of weeks.

Perhaps we can cut out some of decision makers and move things along a littler quicker and more efficient.
The questions though you want answered are in much more detail. The city identified a risk in integrity to the system, added monitoring in the interim, and planned a significant inspection. Then the system at a massive failure before the significant inspection. Despite it failing was this the correct choice? Was the correct Risk adjusted cost choice made?

Then how does this incident inform the future maintenance plans? Should we twin the existing section or just repair as probable failures as they are identfied with the monitoring?

This should take 6 months to a year to do it properly.

If you can’t be an armchair expert on the internet what’s the point of posting here

What was our old branding? The fact I have no idea speaks to how little effect this branding is going to have on my life.

Better yet, what is the motto for any other city? Off the top of my head:

1. Are they still the City of Chumps up north?

2. Regina: Rhymes with Fun. Was this real? I don't even remember. I did like the Experience Regina branding...

3. City of Lakes. I can't remember where, but I'm sure there are a few cities rocking this one? Winnipeg? Minneapolis?

Honestly, if it's not going to be on a license plate, what's the point? Land of the Living Skies ftw!

Heart of the New West?

No, I think that was the even older one... I believe the previous one was Be A Part of Our Energy.

That's kind of how I feel. On a scale of things the city wastes what amounts to my afternoon cappuccino per citizen on, this one is a non issue.

That said, I feel like we just rebranded a few years ago.

We should have just switched from "Be Part of the Energy" to "Be Part of the Rebuild".

Can apply to our energy sector and the Flames...

I like the rebranding. Is it perfect? No. But Calgary needed one. That said, it's not like the rebranding shows up on Google Maps when you search for "Calgary" or it's what the Flames have to wear. So to all the anger warriors, relax.

Well the real reason why a lot of people get worked up over this stuff is because it's a little more trivial. Every city has branding and promoting tourism, that isn't the point. Nothing wrong with a re-fresh and a re-brand so to speak.

$1.7 million to talk to people about it? 2 years of engagement? We got a colourful C for Calgary and talks about a blue sky? If 5 employees were working full time, each earning $100k for 2 years on this engagement, you would still need to spend $700k in discussion on this.

The city says they don't have the financial resources to repair critical electrical work for inner city pools for $600k.

The reason why a lot of people get upset is they see property taxes increased, rental rates increased, high utility rates and fee's. A downtown vibrancy problem, a homeless/tent population and other associated issues.

There is only 1 taxpayer. Years ago I recall the re-branding from "Heart of the New West" to "Be Part of the Energy" and associated explaining was done so that global investors and talent recruiters could better connect with people on what Calgary does. We are the energy capital of Canada. It was also being done for traditional oil and gas and for clean tech and other opportunities.

The logic was what does "Heart of the New West" mean to people in other countries from a recruitment and investor perspective? It's a local thing for western Canada, not for investment banking merger opportunities in Japan.

Now we are getting Blue Sky City to promote Calgary to the world. Do other people not have blue sky's??

And for the posters who try to defend this nonsense, why would a mission critical report for a water crisis take a year but a re-branding of Calgary into Blue Sky City take 2?
