And both teams had decent cover on their shenanigans as the players that were out had legitimate major surgeries that could have return dates massaged into the playoffs for cap purposes. Kane however has a sports hernia in which the longest recover I can find is 16 weeks, but most sources say 6-12 weeks. So even if they hold his surgery back until the day the season starts, he will be cleared prior to the all star game (and likely before Christmas). Going to be hard to make that equivalent to back surgery.
The other thing oilers fans miss with this “plan” of theirs is that in order for it to be a good plan, you need three things:
1. The player is good enough to step into the lineup in the playoffs and be able to make an actual impact.
2. Be able to use the LTIR cap space to make an impact signing.
3. Be a deep enough team to actually make the playoffs without your LTIR player.
Considering the year that Vegas got cute with the cap with Jack Eichel, the pile up of other injuries was a major part of why they didn’t make the playoffs, it’s doubtful that Edmonton can withstand short injuries and still be deep enough to make the playoffs.

Kane has already healed the hernia. Oilers president now saying it’s a hip. Because they both start with h followed by a vowel. Next up? Heart.

Its funny with people putting up the forward group of the Oilers including Kane and Holloway and proclaiming it as the best group of forwards since the 80's. But is the hype real?
Sure its a good group of forwards. But its an old group of forwards, like I expect that part of the incentive for their new free agents is a gift card to the Country Kitchen Buffet.
I mean think about it Janmark is 31 had 4 goals and 8 points in 71 games and hasn't played a full season forever.
Skinner is 32, had a good season last year with 24 goals and 46 points, but he's a defensive hole with a -2.
Adam Henrique is a good player but he's 34, that decline is coming, and you've got to think the same thing with Hyman who has some major miles on his tires.
This is a really old group of forwards, with injury issues, they still have a dog of a blueline, and we still don't know what Skinner is in goal.
And we've found that you can't always outscore your issues in the playoffs.
I get they're excited about this lineup, but its a long ways to training camp and the time that they have to get to the cap. I expect that the league will look hard at Kane going on LTIR, but they'll still need to do more to get cap compliant once they sign Boingboing and Holloway.
Age can jump on a team quickly. The Oilers will also have a really hard decision to make next year with Draisaitl, do they ride it out and risk losing him for nothing if they're in a playoff spot and he hasn't signed.
Is this Oilers team a playoff team? Yer damn right, but are they a sure fire cup champion? Sports is way to unpredictable for it, its just as lightly that a few of their walkers break on the way to the ice, and the Oilers stumble.
And of course, we have the new coach bump. We've seen it a lot with this team, Will they still have that next year or not.
I predict one thing for the Oilers and their fanbase for next year, pain, oh wait, two things, embarrassment, oh no three things, despair.

The other issue with the Oilers media and fans is the off season is not over. Some teams have cap space and assets. Teams like the Flames could still sell.
Colorado has cap space and has Landeskog included in their cap totals on cap friendly. He plays that is a boost but if he doesn’t they could add big time. Kadri back to the Avs? They look very tough again.
Carolina might have room depending on what they do with Necas and Jarvis.
Oilers fans calling it but their is tons of moves that can still be made
Oh yeah there is the trace deadline. Oilers dropped a conditional 1st for 32 overall. If they want to add now they are dishing a 1st in 26 and have no other prospects. Their deadline options worse than last year.
And they are over the cap. Lol let’s ignore all the details and claim the cup in July

Why change a good thing? Oilers felt ultimate pain.
This thread with all the gripe was good luck in the end.

It's funny how Oilers fans like to brag about McDavid's series winner sent the Flames into a rebuild. Well that series winner also sent Tkachuk to Florida who significantly helped shift their culture there into one that was able to win the cup against the Oilers. Funny how that works

Great points. All are true. Also, everyone likes to make the mistake of claiming how great their forward group will be because of what Arviddson and Skinner have done in the past. But the problem is that means nothing now. Both those players were playing top powerplay minutes on their previous teams… now, they will get virtually no powerplay time because McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman, RNH and Bouchard play virtually the entire powerplay. And neither Arvidssom or Skinner have produced with reduced minutes before.
Media especially like to overlook the benefits of ice time and opportunity on production. McDavid is a great player… no doubt about it. But he plays more minutes than anyone - especially powerplay minutes. Most years he’s not in the top 10 in even strength points-per-60. So he (and Draisaitl) take up minutes and opportunities from other other players. Not saying that’s a poor strategy (they are more skilled than the rest of the team)… but it means players that think they will produce with the oilers will likely be surprised. Most skilled players that are used to top six minutes and PP1 opportunities struggle to produce in 3rd line roles.

They really are something. The same logical, knowledgeable person that complained that no one was jumping on the Oilers bandwagon yet he would never cheer for anyone else, advised me that Kane would get the Oilers at least their first round pick back…more if they retain salary. I asked why anyone would want Kane for a first, and isn’t retention actually the issue due to salary cap concerns? It’s because Kane has reformed under McDavid and now is a sought after player. Also advised me that the rest of the Oilers were to blame for the glitter twins not winning the cup. Which is why there are new players. I asked if it was like Desharnais and foegele who were specifically to blame as they were not renewed. I was told “exactly”.
On paper 10 years ago, the new supporting cast would have been formidable. Now? How much pounding can the 30 somethings take, especially in the playoffs?
And for distractions, this Draisatl contract is going to be a lot of noise.
It’s already #1 topic up here.

Without looking, I thought Colorado had some significant cap gymnastics to play coming up, with only half a roster signed including Nichushkin and Landedkog included. Do they actually have space?

$3.9m in cap space with 19 players on the roster, counting Landeskog but not counting Nichushkin.
By the way, I notice the youngest of those 19 roster players are 24 years old, and only four are 30 or older (including Landeskog). That's a team that should be exactly in its prime. If they somehow keep the band together, they'll be very good for about five years and then go to pieces like Humpty Dumpty.
