I think that when it comes to raising families, Columbus is the nicest city in the entire Midwest (which might not be saying a lot). It's surprisingly nice/clean/safe feeling outside of the city center. Having a huge university, and being a capital of a large state, probably helps.

I think Backlund shows more emotion and more intensity than Monahan. I love what he brings on a nightly basis, on and off the ice.
Is he a great or even good Captain? I don't know. Usually Captains are top players and team leaders on important metrics like scoring, and Backs.... isn't that. But he's been around a long time, and he's stable in his role, and maybe that's what the Flames need.
Honestly I feel like the timing was all wrong, the Flames waited too long, needed to make him the Captain right away after Gio or not at all, and it was all just really awkward (felt like it was tied to him signing here at again).
He'll do for now. Hopefully in a couple years one of these new players is showing dominance and can take the C and run with it.

Makes you wonder sometimes about some players, how much do they really really want to win and how much are they willing to forgo to help facilitate that when you have the option.
Not specifically referring to Monahan but in some ways if winning is your primary objective, why some players choose some teams over others for a little more money/term it's baffling.

Monahan was totally ineffective for Winnipeg in the playoffs. I like him, but he does not deserve a contract of this size with his injury history. 5 years is absolutely nuts for Monahan. The Flames had to pay a 1st to get rid of their last contract with him, which only had a year on it, and Columbus is an injury flare up away from being in a much worse situation.
Monahan won the lottery with this contract, and he 100% should have jumped all over it. He's not the type of player that the top competitive teams are going to save cap space for. This contract will bring Monahan to 35, it's absolutely nuts. This is the only big contract Monahan will get going forward. Winning is important, but last year Monahan was on a much more appropriate 1 year $2 million contract.

Yikes, that is indeed a risky term. Take the money and run.

A) This is his job. Like most people, he’s going to go with the employer who pays him the most.
B) We don’t even know if the Jets were interested in bringing him back.
C) Other than a handful of teams at the very top of the standings, and a handful at the bottom, in today’s NHL there isn’t a lot of difference in competitiveness between teams over the span of a 5 year contract. You could argue that the Blue Jackets are one of those teams that will be at the bottom. But there probably won’t be a big difference in the number of playoff games played between the Blue Jackets and Jets over that period, as the Jackets will likely be the better team in years 4-5 of the contract.

This is all hearsay but I recall hearing a rumour that Dubois witnessed a carjacking or shooting or something to that effect, and that was a big motivator for his desire to get out of Columbus.

I spent a week there in 2019 in the downtown. I felt safe during that time. Even got pissed drunk with one of our trainers and walked back on my own to the hotel a few blocks away. Hell, a guy stopped and asked for change and I instead took him inside the arcade he was panhandling in front of and bought him a sandwich and a pop while we played video games together.
It's just one example but I certainly enjoyed my brief visit.

If they’ve got an arcade it can’t be that bad.

Columbus is fine. I usually never have a bad time when visiting my family there. Nationwide Arena is nice and the Jackets fans I interacted with were friendly. The worst thing that happened to me there was a drunk Jackets fan yelling "OHIO!" at me when I was leaving the area after they beat the Flames

Was it after midnight?
’Cos if not, he had the time wrong. He should have been yelling, ‘KONBANWA!’

Disclaimer: I am the resident Monahan hater.
Monahan was terrrrrible at the end of his tenure here. His poor play was in part due to his decision* to play through and hide his injuries. He was so bad, the team had to give up a first round pick just to get out of his contract.
Gaudreau really loved Calgary* and made a tough decision to walk in free agency after giving the Flames 9+ season of exciting, sometimes MVP level hockey, and the greatest Flames memory in the last 20 years.
The first one a hero, and the second one a villain. Makes no sense.
*allegedly.

Ready to eat crow.
I kept saying Monahan scarified the longevity of his career playing through injuries and not being honest with the training staff here.
Bro just signed a huge 5-year ticket that he'll very likely be a boat anchor for. Props Monny!
