I think he is going to surprise a lot of people this season.

Great little article that shows what an underrated signing this was and what an asset he will be at the TDL.

The guy is really good. Just needs to be kept motivated and a 1 year deal should do that!

If we get him going, him and Kuzmenko can set us up nicely for the the 26 draft to cash in bigly hopefully. Maybe throw in a lottery ball for 27.

The NBA is already trading 2031 picks lol.

Mantha has all the tools, but consistency has been elusive. If he can find consistency he's a Couturier type player possession-wise. When he plays physical he creates a lot of space on the ice. But when he takes nights off he's replacement level. He'll have plenty of opportunities this year with the Flames, hope he makes the most of it.

Yeah, a guy with motivation issues on a longer term contract can be another team’s problem

I mean, he's never been a difference maker to be honest with a career high of 24-24-48 in a full season, so I wouldn't expect that he does any better this season at the age of 29. I still like the trade though as he'll return a pick at the deadline given how enamoured GMs get about his size, despite it being known he is a big dude who doesn't play big, thinking to themselves that 'this time, it'll be different'.

Being benched in the playoffs by the last team to trade for him at the deadline probably isn’t going to help Mantha’s value at the upcoming deadline. So yeah, you’d be counting on GMs thinking ‘this time it’ll be different.’

To me, he would need to be having a career year to return anything more than a 3rd round pick at this point. And a 3rd round pick is fine.

Look at the contracts handed out this week. GMs are not as smart as you think. Nor are their memories that long.

How can anyone think this is a bad signing? It's 1 year at $3.5 when we had $29mil in cap space. For a guy who "disappears" and still scores 23 goals.

The only way it would be bad is if he starts influencing all the rookies in a bad way off the ice. Like Lance Bouma...

As Barnburner said "today the Flames signed a 2nd and 4th round pick for 1 year, 3.5)".

That’s only allowed if he’s 18 or under.

This expression never made sense to me. It shouldn't be a good thing to receive a buttload. We know what butts are loaded with, right?

Sure, but this time it'll be different - we'll pair him with Uberdough and you'll all see.

Then when it works we can all come back and say we told you so.

Yes, they are loaded with ####. Ergo, butt=full of #### - it can be reasoned that a buttload is a euphemism (barely) for ####load.

Now, this complicates things a bit - is a ####load good? Possibly not by your original logic. Also, you can say buttload, but assload seems to have a different connotation entirely.

I feel like it has to be something with a donkey lol. An assload of something would have been a lot back in the day.

Yes, the metric unit for a buttload is a #### tonne. It makes total sense.
