Stuffer saying 53-55 wins and an easy road to the finals and winning it. But Gretzky lost his 1st time. Gretzky played in a league with like 4 good teams.

The Oilers have never had to deal with any significant injuries. Think about how many seasons got derailed for the Penguins because of the injuries to Crosby.
Let's do a quick rundown of Gretzky's supporting cast:

Fuhr
Coffey
Kurri
Moog
Fogolin
Lowe (puke in mouth)
Anderson
Messier
Huddy
Semenko (Added for laughs)

McPissy's supporting cast:

Skinner played well...
Foegele? Oh yeah, gone.
Perry, he's back.
Henrique? he's back.

For sure. They are probably terrified of how McDavid would handle trading pissy and will take another kick at the can where they can tell McDavid that they did it for him. Too bad for the Oilers it’s highly unlikely the playoffs pan out for them like they just did this season. The wreckage next offseason will be glorious.

Yup.

This is their one and done shot tbh. After that, Drai needs a new contract. Bouchard needs a new contract. It's essentially the Hawks after Kane & Toews got matching $10.5M contracts.

Stanley Cups before those kicked in: 3
Stanley Cups after those kicked in: 0

It's just math. When you sign even your own elite UFAs to these contracts, it takes a chunk of the ability to have your awesome depth away.

First, it doesn't have to be $4.5M, anything over $2.9 will do

Second, if they don't match, great! You just got another good young player. Who cares if we pay them too much this year?

You'd also have to be considering what his next QO looks like as he'd still be RFA after his offer sheet contract is up.

That "best forward group in the cap era" comment bugged me so I thought about it and there's no way it beats:

Landeskog-MacKinnon-Nichushkin
Burakovsky-Kadri-Rantanen
Lehkonen-Compher-O'Connor
Newhook-Helm-NAK/Sturm

Oh yeah you're correct, I misread the conditions on the pick. You'd think a team like Edmonton with a runway as short as it appears they have to win a cup, would want to save their first round pick so they could leverage it as much as possible at the trade deadline.

These are the kind of dumb decisions teams make when without the guidance of a quality GM.

that group also had Cogliano, who was part of the Nilsson/Cogliano/Gagner wing of the 2006-2018 rebuild

I can't find a link but the actual title for a recent David Staples article was:

"After taking a year off, top prospect back in the fold for Edmonton".

They were talking about Luke Philp.

"Top Prospect" Lol.

To be fair, he may be their top prospect.

The "top" is relatively speaking. Shiniest trinket in the junk pile.

Hell, this is probably better:

Barbashev-Eichel-Stone
Smith-Stephenson-Marchessault
Roy-Karlsson-Amadio
Carrier-Howden-Kolesar

or

Reinhart-Barkov-Verhague
Tkachuk-Bennett-Rodrigues
Tarasenko-Lundell-Loustarinen
Lomberg-Stenlund-Okposo

or

Palat – Point – Kucherov
Killorn – Cirelli – Stamkos
Goodrow – Gourde – Coleman
Colton – Johnson – Maroon

The oilers are also due for an extended injury to McDavid this year. Imagine them without McDavid for 3-4 months. And what if they lost Draisaitl for 2-3 months in that same time period. These guys have played a lot of hockey over the last two seasons and it’s even worse when you consider how many minutes they make them play.

It's always smart to run back the exact same team full of players that will all have much shorter summers than the rest of the league. Not going to be enough gas in the tank for these old guys to even get through the next regular season.
