With him on LTIR, do they need to make any moves before the start of the season or can they just wait till he comes back (if he does at all)?

An offersheet also forces them to make a decision as the clock is ticking. If they match, then every team knows how far they are painted themselves into the corner.

My god the oilers have an old team

McDavid is 27
Draisaitl is 28
Nurse is 29
McLeod is 24
Holloway is 22
Broberg is 23
Bouchard is 24
Skinner is 25

Every other player is 30 or older

The average age of their forwards is 30.7 lol

They have two more years to win a cup and then they are going to be 2023/24 San Jose Sharks bad....for a long ####ing time.

So they tell Kane to stay on LTIR until they have space (either by putting other players on LTIR or just until playoffs). I know everyone likes to say they can’t do that but we all know it happens (Tampa, Vegas, etc.) - we really don’t need to have that argument any more. Teams use LTIR to manipulate the cap and create teams with rosters way over the cap come playoffs. They’ll be able to say to Kane either you do this or we buy you out… which means you get less money overall (because likely no one else will sign you) and no chance at a cup run.

Yup and after that, on the farm and coming up, the players who are cheap roster fills, aren't coming, and sorry Holloway and Boingboing don't look that great. But the Oilers will have to sign them adding another 3 to 4 million to their over the cap 2.4 million. so lets say that they're 6 over. And they buy out Kane in the next window, its not a great help as year one is a 3.5 million dollar hit. I expect they'll take him to some quack who will put him on LTIR til the playoffs. Because I doubt anyone will take his whole salary.

And yeah, that is an old and rickity team.

This is a desperation to win the cup, because I expect they've been told that Draisaitl is not interested in signing a contract, so they have to win next year. So if they're in a playoff sport, they're going to risk losing him for nothing for the cup.

And then go into a rebuild and pray McDavid is going to sign.

But they've done the typical Oiler thing, they've loaded up on offense, but 2 way hockey and their blueline don't matter, and they have to pray that Skinner finds some consistency in goal.

The organizational future for next year is decent if everything goes right, but outright grim after that.

The LTIR cap circumvention rule is so scummy.

It was OK when VGK was using it because they were the geniuses to actually figure it out. Oilers just being the kid who copied someone elses homework.

Vegas didn't figure it out. Doesn't anyone remember Kucherov's t-shirt? And it wasn't even them; Chicago did it in like 2015.

Kane has a sports hernia. It's 6-13 recovery after surgery. No way that keeps him off the active roster in October.

Even a buyout he still oats 3.5mln this year.

It's trade or terminate for the Oilers.

They'll make something up. A year long suspension because he couldn't stay out of the casino.

Kane doesn't seem like the kind of guy who will be willing to sit on the sidelines on LTIR for the good of the team.

I think Holloway is going to be packaged with Kane to get rid of him. Then team will buy out Kane. Someone needs to offer sheet Holloway to screw this up

"just trade Kane or Ceci", they say.

One is the biggest jerk in the league and a locker room cancer, who makes $5m, the other is a defensive black hole, below replacement level player who makes over $3m.

I could see someone taking on Ceci for a sweetener, but no one is taking Kane, unless they get paid to take him and buy him out immediately.

No one is trading for an injured Kane. They just told the world he has a hip issue.

The Oilers have tried to pull this crap before and got called out for it by LA. Trading injured players and not telling the others team.

Take Holloway buy out Kane. Rebuilding team would consider it.

Conroy… play some 3D chess. Approach another team that’s a contender. Get them to offer sheet Holloway at price that costs a 2nd round pick (theirs will be later than the flames). Then take on a bad contract from them along with Holloway as compensation.

This ends in one of 2 scenarios:
A) Oilers match and are put in an even worse cap situation
B) Oilers don’t match. Contending team gives up a 2nd round pick. Flames get Holloway. Oilers lose their best young player.
