I guess I'm not as sold on the long-term outlook on this player, especially at C, and especially especially as a C that could contribute in the playoffs. I would have preferred them to hold to get more information this season and maintaining the option to sell him for assets if he's not showing more progression

If he proved this year wasn't a fluke and was a center he'd be worth 7-8 million

The new contract will have new terms. Because he's only 26, he's not eligible for a NTC/NMC on his current contract, so any clauses on the new deal won't apply retroactively (if he was over 27, they potentially could have).
EDIT: This was posted earlier in this thread regarding the clauses... "Years 1-4: 10 team no trade list, Year 5: 8 team"

He's a really good player and this is a really, really good signing. And the team has to put some players on the ice. They're not going scorched Earth. And he's still young.
I think this is a fantastic deal.

Meanwhile it's about 5 minutes into the rebuild.

Awesome deal.

They need bodies and need to hit the cap floor. This contract will be over when the Flames are making noise in the playoffs

This.
There is still some responsibility to ice a real team when charging the money they do to the STH and suite occupants.

If Kuzmenko was the same age as Sharangovich I wouldn’t mind them re-signing him but he is useless when he isn’t scoring. I’d take him on a short deal but no interest in having him on term.

You say this all the time. No one spends and this time here having discussions putting in time and effort wishing the team burns.
This is a rebuild. Kuzmenko doesn’t fit a rebuild.

I think it's a fair signing. Sharangovich was pretty great from Q2 on. After finding his game for the first 15 games, he had 29G and 54P in his last 67GP... That's a 35G, 66P pace! That's a bargain for $5.75M.
Is Yegor perfect, of course not. He and his line need to work on a lot of things defensively. That said he is the perfect player for a rebuild. A fast forward, that's a huge threat on breakaways, is great in the shootout, and has a great shot on the PP, and is among the league leaders for SHGs. Once the Flames started clicking in the last quarter of the season, he put up 9 PP points in 21GP. That makes me cautiously optimistic about him turning into a 35 goal, 70 point player.
I really look forward to Huberdeau - Zary - Sharangovich as our 2nd line.

He’s 26 and scored 30 goals. We have cap space and that money wasn’t going to be used anyways. Even if he sucks he won’t hold us back from doing things as we likely won’t be competing until year 3 of the deal anyways.

He (Sharangovich) can continue to work on and improve his defensive game.

My 2 cents on Kuzmenko, from listening to what Gonchar(development coach with VAN) had to say about him:
1. His defensive play is due to him never being taught proper system play.
2. Kuzmenko put in a ton of effort on his defensive game, which resulted in a drop in his offense, but he was still always doing it with a smile.
3. Kuzmenko is a pro, and his Defensive play will click eventually.
4. He only had 2 years in the NHL, and is still adjusting.
I'm a huge fan of the guy, and I think that he will work his behind off to become a more complete forward. If he figures it out he will become a star.
