Icon48 Utah re-signs Valimaki (two years, $2m AAV)

Just got the media release in my inbox

Quote:
SALT LAKE CITY (June 29, 2024) – Utah Hockey Club announced today the signing of defenseman Juuso Valimaki to a two-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“We are looking forward to having Juuso return to our team for a third season,” said Bill Armstrong, general manager of Utah Hockey Club. “He is a big, strong, two-way defenseman who has been a great addition to our defensive group over the past two seasons.”

The 25-year-old Valimaki recorded 2-15-17 and 12 penalty minutes (PIM) in 68 games with the Arizona Coyotes in 2023-24. He had a team-best plus-12 and also totaled 90 blocked shots which ranked third on the Coyotes.

The 6-foot-2, 205 pound blueliner set career-highs in goals (4), assists (30) and led Coyotes blueliners with 34 points during the 2022-23 campaign.

Good for him. Made himself into an NHL player.

Are we still supposed to feel regret he is no longer a flame?

Keeping Mackey over Valimaki will always stick in my craw.

No, we feel regret we got nothing for him as a Flame. He lost some development time and is only 25, he can still pop.

Connor Mackey is 27 and has played 44 NHL games - including 1 this past season. Valimaki is 25 and has played 228 NHL games, including 146 the past 2 seasons. How are people still trying to argue it wasn't a bad decision? It wasn't a franchise-altering decision, but it was a bad one.

Frankly, I don't think either Mackey or Valimaki was going to pan out in Calgary. Valimaki needed plenty of ice time to improve his game, and he just wasn't getting that unless he went to a team with no depth on D.
