Zeev doesn’t have that slam dunk potential.
Flames went with the high skill more intelligent player.

I read somewhere the reason that Philly didn't want Buium was that his agent also represents Cutter Gauthier and they are still salty about how that was handled.
I think most surprising was Ottawa taking Yakemchuk at 7.
Flames took Parekh because he has the highest offensive upside. Maybe a little wary of the American/NCAA factor with Buium.
NJ took Silayev because they think he is the unicorn.

I didn't see them adding a pick for sure. Thought they'd lose two of the eight in moving up and end up with six selections.

You could definitely split hairs all day between Parekh and Buium. I wouldn't be surprised if nationality worked it's way into the decision. It's not something that should be overly emphasized, but if the prospects are practically neck and neck, it's an easy tie breaker.
It will be interesting to see how all these defensemen taken in the top 12 pan out and re-visit in a few years.

Lots said the US factor wasn’t a thing with Buium but it definitely was.
He wanted a US market, which I think helped Calgary and Ottawa steer another direction.
He’s a proud member of the US program.
Though Ottawa taking Yakemchuk was a head scratcher.

I won't disagree with you on Zeev but I think Parekh was higher on their list anyway.

If Ottawa took Parekh and we were out on Buium, that would have been a depressing draft.

I think many here were far too critical of Yakemchuk.
He played on a terrible team that has very limited offensive talent. Yak tried to do too much and as a result made some questionable plays at times.
With better support around him I believe he will rein those bad habits in knowing he won’t have to do everything himself.
His offensive and physical upside in exciting and I’m happy he went higher than expected cause I’m a big fan. Before knowing Parekh would be there, and assuming Iginla and Catton were gone I wouldn’t have been too upset with Yakemchuk as our pick. Silayev would have been intriguing as well.

What are the stipulations for "star"?
Seth Jones?
Provorov?
Sanheim?
Morrisey?
Theodore?

Yeah fair. out of that list. I'd say Morrissey and Theodore.
Both 2013 draft picks. Wow been a while. Just seems the top Dmen are coming from other leagues.
Bowen Byram may be well on his way though.

To be clear, for me, it isn't nationality, it's where they're playing. A player like Chucky playing in the OHL for example is no risk but a Chucky playing in a US college? Big risk for me for the Flames.

I think Parekh is a lock, unless he's injured.
Morin has a good chance, if he gets off to a good start this year
Basha has a decent chance (50/50?)
Mews played on the under 18s, and probably has a good chance next year
Misa is a long shot
Battaglia might have a chance next year
Would be incredible if Morin made it, and he and Parekh were the top D pairing for TC
