Tanev’s a great player, but there are a lot of miles on that odometer. Any GM signing him to a long term contract will come to regret it.

Well the LEafs are probably only interested in what he can help them do next year. After that, they absolutely will not tolerate any more playoff losing and make big changes (and this time they may mean it).

Anything over 3 years is crazy to me. And I love Tanev. But man that body is banged up and he ain’t young. I’d be happy with a 2 year deal but he’s obviously going to get more than that.

After next year, they'll actually have cap space to do something with.

Blame Treliving all you want, but it was the previous management that created this problem by spending half the cap on four forwards.

I wonder if we start seeing load management become a thing in the NHL. Certain players, especially Tanev, can benefit a lot from playing only 60ish games. Reduce risk of injuries, and keep the body fresher for later in the year/ post season

I’d sign Zad just to protect the young’ us / Wolf

Annoying the Oilers is another bonus

Sign him just to piss Tre off and then flip him . Also, need to keep the other Russians in check.

That's not true, the only hockey players in the world are Josh Anderson, Rasmus Ristolainen, Zadorov, and Ryan Reaves! That's why he's always after them!

Well we all know after a few years he'll just be bought out or traded... or retire. No chance he's a Leaf at the end of a long term contract.

He’ll only retire if he’s injured and can collect. Which is likely.

But it will be front loaded, with bonuses, so he can be traded near the end with most of the money paid.

Who said anything about Treliving? It's Shanahan that's been there for all the failures, and if they fail next season, I expect he's gone.

A lot of posters have been bashing Treliving's every move in Toronto.

Treliving didn't do a good job so far imo, but he's pretty handcuffed by the core four, and if he's not allowed to trade them, and now can't because of NTC and stuff, then that's on all of Leafs management.

But his trade deadline was still pretty terrible. Terrible enough to have his job in jeopardy already? Probably not. And if they falter next year, I think the guys above him take the fall and he pleads for the chance to do things his way.
