Older, likely close to fully grown, showing some late promise - maybe Flames thinking he can be a bottom 6 contributor sooner than other options left on the table. Most of these kids are 3-5 years away...

Don't really understand why Button uses mid round picks on overagers? A 6th or 7th, sure. But why a 4th?

How many people have actually watched him or know his story? Sure, in the 4th round and purely stat watching, it is a mixed bag of optimism and pessimism, but nobody on here knows anything about him or has seen a single second of his game.

Scouts have seen him, and feel he is worth spending a pick on him right now. I am curious to see what he looks like at development camp. I would rather be more optimistic given some of the rough numbers, than state that this is a waste of a pick.

Plenty of people (including myself) thought Mangiapane was a waste of a pick. Who really knows.

They could put him right into the AHL if they wanted, no?

If you want a rational explanation, the most probable is that the Flames have exhausted their ranked list and are going off area scout recommendations.

Very strange pick. Was involved in Tier II Junior for many years. His point progression looks very much like decent hockey players at that level but not elite ones. Very average 18 year old year, better in his 19 year old year (4th on team scoring) and then dominates as a 20 year old against 17-19 year olds. Very strange pick. Hope it works out.

That is what I thought, they immediately trade the next pick. They may well have exhausted their list.

Do you guys not understand how many picks the Flames have over the next 2 years?? A swing for the fences with a 4th rounder is not only ok, it's probably advisable.

Yikes. Hope they haven't exhausted their list in the fourth round....

Probably also explains trading the next pick to grab a couple more late picks. At this point, if you think everyone's a long shot, might as well have as many of them as you can get and hope one hits.

That would be pretty sad.

Would have preferred Anthony Romani if they were swinging for the fences on an average guy. A year younger and dominated a higher league.

Also, don't forget the impact of COVID. Especially with Ontario players

I think Tod said in a predraft interview they generally have a key list of about 65-70. They've expanded it to 80 this year.

Why? I think that's pretty standard for every team.

It doesn't mean they're just pulling names out of a hat at this point. It means that the guys going at this level have only likely been seen by the scouts who follow that one league rather than everyone having seen the players, so it's up to each scout to make the case for the players they like.

Having a list of guys you like that you have heavily scouted is one thing.

But every NHL team should have an internal ranking of every draft eligible player.
