I don't think it matters. 50 million people watched the disaster last night. Also, it's pretty common for elderly people to have good days and bad days.

He does sound like a completely different person. Difference between reading a teleprompter and having to actually think on his feet a bit? The weird cough and hoarseness he had last night was all gone too, which seems odd.

Lots of reasons. He's reading off a teleprompter rather than having to think on his feet. It's a lower pressure situation than a debate. And people in cognitive decline often have big variations in their lucidity depending on the situation.
Last night wasn't necessarily the "real" Biden; it was probably him at his worst. But no seasoned politician with their full faculties would perform that poorly in a debate regardless of the context, and when you're projecting how he'll be 2-4 years from now, particularly in high-pressure situations, it's pretty grim.
Joe Biden being able and the best man in America for President for the next 5 years is laughable. The Calgary Flames trading everybody away and being considered a competitive team for the Cup in 24-25 is equally laughable.
People know when they are being sold garbage and don't like to be insulted.

As long as Joe is still breathing he's a better choice and easily the 'best' man of these two. Scratch that - dead he's still a better choice.
Half of the American people lick up the garbage that Trump sells them, which should be (but apparently isn't) insulting.
after yesterday, I'm not sure the patented "yeah but at least he's not that guy over there" strategy is going to work any more.
The thing is that's pretty much always been the strategy, even before last night. And to be blunt "not the other guy" is more or less the modern go to political strategy. Look here in Canada, "Not Trudeau" is the current CPC strategy, they aren't running on a meaningful platform at all. And that should easily be enough.

I'd agree if there was any evidence that they tried to go through back channels and convince Biden not to run again, but there is absolutely zero indication that that happened over the last few years. It was clear even 2 years ago that Biden was lagging generic Democrats and down ballot candidates, so they should have started the process then. Yeah, it would've been pretty unprecedented, but so is an 81 year old Presidential candidate in cognitive decline.
