One thought I have had the whole time the Marner thing has been out there is the Leafs will send him to Utah for futures and use the cap space to take a run at all the big guys but actually having a legit chance to close on Stamkos to fill Marner’s spot and have more cap savings to chase Dmen

I think if they find a way to convince Marner to move it will be more of a young cost controlled asset move and futures. In two years they will need a lot of money for 97. Yes, I am still beating that drum.

That is why I am thinking Marner for 6 and they take the best Dman on their list and sign Stamkos to a 2 year deal at 7.5M per. Keeps flexibility, keeps them highly competitive, and keeps the options open for when 97 could be a UFA.

I still don’t think Marner will bring back the 6th overall. Who would Utah be competing with that would require that kind of price. If Marner goes it is in a hockey trade like the Tkachuk one

That is a terrible deal for a guy who is coming off a 40 goal season and has two seasons in row where he was a PPG player. Not sure why he would sign a short term deal for a huge discount, maybe you can get him on a 5 year deal at that rate.
If he was willing to sign a two year deal at 7.5 he would have done it in Tampa already I suspect.

I feel Stamkos winds up in Detroit or Nashville.

Maybe I am overestimating the desire Stamkos would have trying to contribute to his hometown team getting over the hump? Is Stamkos going to chase the money when he has made $100M in his career already? He could chase cups and play in spots he has wanted to.

?
Stamkos has money and cups already... I don't even think it's worthy to discuss. He's going to sign back in Tampa.

Yeah I think it's about keeping his family comfortable and enjoying the ending of his career somewhere.
Why the hell would he pick his family up and move them to the likes of Edmonton? Lmao.

lol do we have a new intellectual honesty to beat into the ground for the Conroy era? I love it. Need Arnie screaming “it’s not a rebuild!” at kindergarteners

Are we going to even be able to reach the cap minimum if we trade any more guys?

We will have to things like take Orlov and Nadeau for a 7th rounder or Orlov and a 2025 1st for a 7th rounder. But I am sure we will find a way.

If ever Conroy was able to trade Kadri, without retention, for something of significant value, he deserves GOAT status.
Kadri is still a fantastic player and without a doubt he is a top 6 centre but that contract is rough.

Say that Helenius and Sennecke go at 7 and 8.
That would leave the Flames to draft Catton as next on their list.
However, if we think they are going to be forced into drafting Iginla that would be why they would need to adjust the list after seeing how teams draft.

I don't know why but there is something about Dickinson that doesn't appeal to me.
I hope he is gone before we pick.
