Not a rumour, but on TSN, Craig Button suggests Kadri should be Toronto's primary target even ahead of trying to re-sign Bertuzzi or Domi.

Craig is usually plugged in with the Flames because of his brother. This is interesting to me and might be more than pure speculation

Matthew Knies please.
Before you pile on, of course I know it won't happen....
The #1 search on hockeydb is Nazem Kadri at the moment.

I don’t understand why the Flames are interested in signing any more wingers in free agency. They have enough wingers as is. Assuming Zary moves to centre, you have: Huberdeau; Sharangovich; Kuzmenko; Pospisil; Coleman; Coronato; Pelletier. All of these guys should be playing in the top 9.
Pelletier needs to clear waivers so I think he sticks this year. Klapka is knocking on the door and brings something severely lacking in the forward ranks: SIZE.
You sign another winger and you risk losing a good young player on waivers.

We could easily move Sharangovich, and Kuzmenko before the TD, so we can get more assets. Moreover, because this is a rebuild Coleman, and Kadri might want to move. Finally, this organization doesn't believe in giving players spots without competition. That applies to Pelletier, Coronato, Klapka, Schwindt, Kerins, Stormgren, Duehr, you name it. It even applies to Zary and Pospisil if they have a somophere slump.

That's the big thing. This past season, five players who were on the opening-night roster were gone by the trade deadline. I expect to see more in-season moves in '24-25. Any apparent surplus of wingers will sort itself out as players get traded.

I know it's early and we don't quite know how FA is going to shake out, but does anyone else feel like Conroy is following a "Vegas expansion draft model?" Maybe not on purpose, but just by happenstance...
Loading up on picks
Taking good teams "misfits" and depth players and giving them bigger roles
Building depth
The team may be bereft of high end talent at the top, but with some decent short term FA signings they might be able to roll four lines and three D pairs and be a total pain in the ass to play against.
I know with every trade people like to clamor about how bad the Flames are going to be, but if they brought in a solid top 4 Dman and a couple forwards like the rumored Debrusk and Duclair, both who are still under 30 and have multiple 20+ goals seasons, if they get solid goaltending they might not be doormats like many think.
Maybe I'm nutso, but we'll see.

I think Yegor is a centre now. With an off season to prep, and the promise he showed last year, he’s a safe bet to start at that position come training camp. Better to develop him that way and then if we draft or acquire natural centres he can play wing and take faceoffs in a pinch.
Plus it makes him more versatile and if they decide to move him that helps his value.

I just made this comment in the Mangipane Trade thread. Conny's probably been mandated by Edwards to try and ice the most competitive team possible until all of these picks turn out. I'm sure he'll be plenty active in Free Agency, and I'm ok with that, as long as he doesn't spend picks on anything but entry-level players.

I get the feeling they're trying to finish 6 - 10. Competitive and pushes teams, not N absolute dumpster fire and keep your first pick next year.

I don’t see Zary playing center unless one of Sharan / Kadri / Backlund go down. I also was a big fan of the Zary - Kadri - Pospisil line.

Play Zary at C and move Sharangovich back to the wing unless we are looking to sign him at a discount!

Pospisil also played C at the worlds and played it well apparently.
Flames current C's: Kadri, Backlund, Rooney
May also play C's: Sharangovich, Zary, Pospisil

You are not wrong per se, but the huge question mark is goaltending.
The flames flamed out last year even with Markstrom. With a clearly weaken defense corps, can they keep the puck out of the net?

I would run with Kadri, Sharky, Backlund and Rooney
Lines would be as such :
Zary-Kadri-Pospisil
Huberdeau-Sharky-Kuzmenko
Pelletier-Backlund-Coleman
Greer-Rooney-Klapka
|

Don’t mind this look at all but Greer isn’t under contract. I do hope we extend an offer though. He’s a model 4th liner that brings it every night.
