Still waiting for the hospital ward list of oiler injuries.
Holland out…that’s the end of his contract so maybe he retires, maybe not. This isn’t sudden though…this date has been literally known since the day he signed it. Are the Oilers so thick that they don’t have a backup plan?
Maybe they should get mcdavid’s agent in as manager…wait…he’s already president of hockey ops. Ok…ok…how about his junior coach…what…he’s already the coach? Okay…what about McDavid? He’s already designed and won all star contests.
Sather? Lowe? Gretzky? Messier?
In all seriousness, the next GM has a career make or break 2 years ahead of them. No draft picks, 2 star players to be signed or traded, an increasing salary cap with less money to spend should the stars both get signed. An aging roster with salary commitments.
The biggie is the expectations from fans and media which can lead to popular but incorrect decisions for the team.
I don’t see McDavid leaving actually…he has so much control over hockey operations. And I think that’s the biggest reason why Draisatl will get overpaid and won’t leave. Draisatl is literally going to have to break up with McDavid if he wants to leave…and his buddy will over pay to not get dumped.
Can you imagine the constant speculation and pressure if Draisatl hasn’t signed by September? “Have you signed yet” will be worse from Edmonton and elsewhere media than “are we there yet” from children.
Delicious!
So did McDavid cancel his vagina rejuvenation surgery?

I guess we’ll have to wait for the cliffhanger episode on his next miracle medical procedure 8 part limited series from Rogers place on Roger’s Sportsnet sponsored by Rogers.
Based on the conn smith trophy, Mavi might not even appear in his own show because he’s consoling teammates from the horrors of the show.

Future historians will celebrate June 24, 2024 as the date when the timeline corrected itself.
I replayed 0:20 - 0:25 about twenty times just for the Ekholm stick smash, because it represents every Oiler franchise, media, and fan heart breaking simultaneously. Chef's kiss
The cap is going up 5% 2025/26 (escalator clause as mentioned by Elliott Friedman) so it will be around $92M.
They are in cap jail & will remain so if they resign the two studs.
They don’t want to admit it, but the only time to maximize the asset of both of them via trade is right now, on those contracts.
They would receive an insane bounty, but it will not happen.
They should have plenty to resign divesaitl. The projected increase and no more dead cap would alone equal nearly 10mil:
Expiring contracts: 18.65mil
Expired dead cap space: 5.47mil
Cap Increase (proj.): 4mil
Total free cap: 28mil
Saying Leon gets half of that, that would leave 14mil for Ceci, Bouchard, McLeod and Ryan. And probably not too much worry about McDavids pay raise as Kane/Kulak money comes off the books the following year.
Buuuuut, it's Edmonton. So that 28 will likely get eaten into by Connor Brown style cap carryover deals they will sign this year (up to 6.6mil), buyouts for Campbell, and whatever retention deals they make at TDL next year to dump a bad contract and chase their next savior signing. Not to mention if they are going to try and bridge current RFA's Holloway and Broberg with 1 year deals, that will be more raises required the following year.
A competent GM and management team could hide some of Hollands mistakes with the cap increase and shrewd signings. So here's to several more years of total E=NG.
It's not about having enough to re-sign Draisaitl. It's about having enough to re-sign him at $15 million and McDavid who would have plenty of suitors lined up to give him 20% of the cap. That's also discounting the fact that both of them may be leaning to greener pastures for the 2nd half of their career. Oilers fans are clinging to this whole discount thing but as we saw with the Flames, players simply aren't willing to take discounts to play in small market Canada and for that matter it rarely happens as Tavares never took a discount to sign in Toronto despite the fact he wanted to play for them in the worst way.

No NHL management team heads to the draft and into free agency with a better situation than Jeff Jackson.
Mark Spector looks at what the Oilers CEO has inherited as he takes over following the departure of Ken Holland.

Really??
Hilarious. Their lack of picks and cap space is a great thing?

No NHL management team heads to the draft and into free agency with a better situation to buy out players, deal with a lack of cap space, and not have to worry about making complicated draft picks, than Jeff Jackson
