1) for those that feel this is a bad fit for WSH, I think he is going to THRIVE in DC. I expect him to exceed 30g, and dominate the fancy stats. If WSH can make the playoffs, Mang will come to play and get his retirement purse. Get ready for the talking heads out east to bring up Mang a lot.

2) agree he was overpaid. Agree he had a bad season. But damn I will miss him.
He made it onto the team despite being an undersized 6th rounder, on his second draft. He always believed in himself, and gave 100%, and I think he made his teammates better. He was pretty consistent and brought it in the playoffs. He was scared of no one. He also has one of the best names ever. See you soon Yeastmode. You have been a favourite of mine

My first thought is that this is selling low on him, and that he would be worth more at the deadline. But that is offset (probably more than offset) by the fact that they can use the space for many things, including signing guys that they can then trade for more picks.

In light of that, good trade.

I don't see this as any specific or further sign of a rebuild. A retool, sure.
Mangipane seems like a good guy but his 30 goal season and then WHC gold came out of nowhere.

Easily knocked down and off the puck, and last year was similar to the many previous ones beforethe 30 goal season...never an impact player or game changer.

Him and Dube gone definitely opens slots, filled by someone more likely to be more dynamic in some way.

Kuzzy will net them a 1st+ at the deadline I'm betting.

The return on that Lindholm trade is just going to get more juicy.

Yup. Teams can go 10% over from July 1 until the end of training camp.

With Backstrom on LTIR, the Caps' current roster will be compliant when the season starts.

Brett Hull has entered the chat.

But Mangiapane has got to be solidly in 2nd place.

Yeah it's becoming evident they plan to use some of that cap space on a UFA forward. I really like this trade without retention. He was never going to fetch a 1st round pick with the way he's trending the past two seasons.

Maybe if he puts up 40 goals this year, but the odds of a 1st for Mangiapane seems pretty low.

As for the rebuild talk, yes the Flames have kept pounding the 'compete for the playoffs' drum, but this quote from Conroy should put an end to all discussion:

"and we have continued to emphasize the importance of how upcoming drafts will influence the future of our franchise"

Talk about being competitive all you want (as well you should), but not only have their actions been crystal clear, but Conroy has now overtly stated their goals.

Praise the fricking Hockey Gods!

What are the chances they go after a guy like Stephenson?

Seems like they're going to push for a C in Free Agency

Ya there is no retool going on, that has been evident for a long time.

Probably. I think that's silly and they should just leave a spot open for one of Pelletier/Coronato to claim rather then earmarking it for some pointless UFA acquisition.

This trade reminds me so much of the Glencross trade. Although with Glenny we also got a 3rd.
They are almost a similar type player.

Does Mangiapane end on a PTO though next year? Who knows…

I think they are planning on upgrading on him via free agency and scooped up a 2nd round pick in the process. He was found money for the organization as a 6th round pick that had some productive seasons and solid middle six forward but it seems like the player wasn't happy so they spin him into a 2nd round pick and opened up some cap space to find a guy that can replace him and maybe provide a bit more offense. I actually think he could have productive season for the Caps as a 20 goal, 40 point winger as I think this trade was good for both parties.

I hate it.

To trade a Johnathan Huberdeau level talent who makes less than 6 and could have potentially extended for less is a bad move imo.

Oddly enough, I still don't mind the flames forward depth. They could add a number 1 center and be competitive.

Huberdeau
Sharangovich
Kuzmenko

Zary
Kadri
Pospisil

Pelletier
Backlund
Coleman

Coronato
