Can Draisaitl ever go a full presser without saying something condescending to the media? I realize some reporters can ask weird questions, but he doesn't always need to be pissy. It's really not that hard to say, yes my first preference would be to re-sign, then kick it down the road behind closed doors. You say the positive things out of respect for the fans.

May be he just has no respect for those fans?

A 90 minute presser to talk to a bunch of players when only one guy scored half the team's points. Literally what is the point of asking Nugent anything?
"How disappointed are you this year, Ryan?"
"Yeah this was a tough loss. I was really hoping McDavid was going to be able to win that last game for us, like he did all the other ones, but it was disappointing for sure when he wasn't able to pull it off. I mean, I was cheering him on as hard as I could, and I made sure to get the door for him the six or seven times he came off the ice every game. It just wasn't enough though. I don't have many years left to get my name on that thing, and I really don't want to go somewhere where I'll have to do anything to get it, so... we're all hoping he can step up next year and finally get this thing done for us."

Here’s why McDavid should have gone out for the conn smythe; because it’s an honour not some blue participant ribbon. Winning the conn smythe and accepting it shows true leadership in the face of adversity.
Waaah he didn’t want to…Waaah. Not a leader. Would only get it if the Oilers won? Even less of a leader.
Here’s something else. Senior oilers players should have told him to get the award. And he should have listened to them if they did. You want class? The Oilers should have all gone to the bench or even onto the ice to support their captain.
16 teams of 20-25 players and you were the best player throughout 4 rounds? For many players, it is the highlight of leadership and leading the team on a daunting journey.
Did the flames want to get back on the ice to congratulate linden? No. Iginla knew it was the right thing to do so they did it. Tina turner played at a McDonald’s manager’s conference when she had a #1 album because she made the commitment when she needed the money before the album was successful.
I have found the way the oilers play to be disrespectful to opponents; slew feet, spearing, dirty behind the play shots…and that’s not including crapweasel Perry and Kane. This is on brand.
Poor Connor! Not a leader and therefore totally on brand.
One last thing; if you can’t do it for the team, the league, the game, the fans, people who supported you along the way or even for yourself, do it for your parents and your family. Be a grown up. Be a leader.

This is actually one of the few things I really like about Draisaitl. His disdain for Edmonton media is beautiful.

I'm not sure that is deliberate. ‘Disdain’ seems to be his default setting.

The color guy who's having an orgasm is Billy Lindsay, I think he was a Panthers original IIRC. He scored the goal that sent them to the finals in 1996.

Rewatching game 7 right now and it's glorious, this will stay on my PVR for the foreseeable future. Watching the few Oilers fans in the crowd sit in stunned silence during the 2 Panthers goals, rewinding over and over again, reliving all the futile Oiler plays. The last few mins as the clock counts down to zero, the anguish and hopeless look on McDavid's stupid face, the bench slumped over in utter failure.
It's all so beautiful.

Very well said.
It isn’t the biggest snub in the world, but there were plenty of reasons to suck it up and do it. Maybe he should renounce winning it if he felt so little about it?
We will never know, but I can’t help but think he would have picked it up and taken the picture if game 7 was in Edmonton.

Initially I kind of cut him some slack as I'm sure he was extremely disappointed but out of respect for the award, the league, and fans he should have manned up and accepted the trophy. Clearly he was trying to push the narrative that he doesn't care about the individual awards despite never objecting to being on the ice in open net situations or powerplays in blowout games to pad his individual stats. Kind of rings hollow when his actions have always pointed to a player that's never said "no" to an opportunity to pad his stats.

I don’t even really care that he didn’t go out for the trophy. My issue is once again the double standard. Just pretend for a moment that the roles were reversed. Florida lost and Tkachuk wins the Conn Smythe and no shows. We would never hear the end of it from Oiler fans, Staples, Spector, Sportsnet, McLean etc. I’m just so sick of it.

To be fair, if McDavid went out and collected the trophy, CP would be mocking him forever because he "only cares about individual recognition". No winning.

I would hope, at least, that McDavid was genuinely upset after the loss and so were his teammates. Forcing McDavid to go out and accept a trophy in tears while Florida fans jeered and threw plastic rats at him, although perhaps entertaining for Flames fans, would be a bit much. McDavid is also the captain of his team. He has to lead the painful debrief with this teammates. That was his priority over the individual award.

I disagree. I think back on that photo of Giguere. He accepted the trophy while very clearly unhappy about it.
You can be classy and respectful and unhappy all at the same time. People do it every day.

the Oilers media voters basically Theodored the ballots to ensure the guy won the trophy (which to be fair he was going to win anyhow)

I am really hoping that the Panthers can have the rings ready for when the Oilers visit Florida next year! Presenting them the rings the day before or the day of that game would be amazing.

Oh I definitely think people would make fun of him. The difference is that it would only be us, and only because it’s fun to make fun of Edmonton for literally everything, whereas even guys on the NHL Network were saying they didn’t like McDavid no-showing.
