6. VGK
What makes it more interesting is the number of 1st round picks that moved last year was 0 which was the first time in almost a decade.
7 first round picks moved in 2022
9 first round picks moved in 2021
The sense is that once Anaheims 3rd overall pick is in, everything could open up if teams go off the board early or a run of forwards or defenseman takes place.
I know Frank keeps saying the Flames are looking to move up from 9th but I’ve heard they’re more interested in moving up from 28 still as they would prefer 2 picks in top 15.

I wonder if the Flames and Buffalo could work out a deal?:
To BUF:
- Andersson
- Mangiapane (50% retained)
- 28 OA
To CGY:
- Samuelsson
- 11 OA
Dahlin, Power, Byram and Samuelsson are all LHed. So is Bryson, Clague and Johnson. Clifton and Jokiharju are their only RHed options who I don’t believe either are in the teams long-term plans.
Adding a top 4 RH D while offloading Samuelsson’s hefty contract could be desirable to them and Mangiapane has been linked to them due to his chemistry with Cozens in international tournaments.

That seems like a good trade for both teams IMO. Would love to see something like that.

I think UTA needs to add at least a 2nd. That said I think that Andersson would get a better return from a team with less cap space due to his contract.
I could see UTA going after Chabot. Sanheim is another name that comes to mind. If the 6th is in play for a D then K'Andre Miller, Michael Anderson, and Cam York would be the type of D I'd target.

A name I haven't heard around here much is Matt Roy. I liked his play in LA, move Andersson, then sign Roy if its reasonable term. Profit

I was taught always to ask myself first: ‘What can stop this from working?’
Move Andersson, then watch Roy re-sign in LA?
Move Andersson, then watch Roy, a native Michigander, sign with another U.S. team because he doesn't want to play in Canada?
Move Andersson, then find out Roy wants a fat retirement contract or no dice?
Andersson may get traded. But you can't consider him expendable because some other guy might make it to free agency, where all 32 teams can bid on him.

I am aware of how free agency works. Obviously the idea of trading Rasmus wouldn't be frickin hinged on signing Roy. Don't need to over analyze it.

That would be a horrifically bad deal for Carolina.

I really like Blake Coleman, but with his playoff experience, friendly cap hit, and the production he put up last season; Is it really worth hanging on to him for the Flames at this point? Could he be a piece the Flames use to move up in the draft? The Senators are looking to avoid rebuilding the rebuild, could the Flames build a package to attain the 7th overall? Would a deal including Coleman, Bahl, and the 28th overall be enough to get it done? Coleman’s 200 foot game, offensive upside, and all around veteran leadership would huge on the ice and in the locker room. Bahl has shown he can play the stay at home shut down roll very well, which would help anchor their new back end featuring Ulmark, and he has potential offensive upside as well. Maybe you swap Coleman for Sharangovich if the Sens feel he’s got more to offer them going forward. But I don’t think that Ottawa doesn’t want to wait for another young player to flourish. After seeing his brother lift the Cup this year I think the clock is running for the Senators to make the playoffs before Brady starts wanting out. Matthew himself has said his brother is made for the playoffs, and I’m inclined to believe that! Their pick at 7 is worth more as a trade piece than a pick for them at this point.

The way I see it, you need a Blake Coleman during a youth movement. Steady, leads-by-example veteran who is still productive, playing to his salary, and conducts himself professionally. For a team that is about to get younger and more inexperienced, they do need a locker room leader like him. Between him and Backlund I'd be OK with him staying, as long as he wants to.

I don't think that a GM will be able to sell his fan base on this. If you're moving a top 10 pick then your fanbase is expecting a Necas, Lundell, or a Marner type return.
I think it is a lot more likely to see a deal around Norris for Coleman.

^ I agree that Coleman could be a guy that a lot of teams will have interest in and it wouldn’t surprise me either if Coleman would welcome a move to a competitive team. Outside of Andersson, I think Coleman is a guy the Flames could get very good return on.
That said, I’d be a bit surprised if he’d agree to go to Ottawa. I do wonder though about Dallas or New Jersey. Could there be something around 10OA after all? Coleman and 28 for 10?

I think Coleman's trade value is lower than you'd think. His 4.9 mill AAV contract goes all the way until 2028 when he's 36 years old.
The term and age will make teams think twice. He'd have a lot of value with retention, but it's risky to retain on someone for that long.

I know this came up previously with mostly negative response but looking at teams who are looking to offload cap (Athetic had a piece on that this morning), would the Flames be interested in taking on Tanner Jeanotte?
Only one year remaining at $2.6M, not a lot. Looks like low risk. Problem is Tampa is stretched as thin as a team could be draft capital wise. Meaning there’s likely no sweeter attached.
Would you take on Jeanotte for ‘future considerations’? Thinking here is that he would assume a free asset. You could see how things go over the season and decide to resign him, as a Sasky he probably would have pinyin playing close to home. He shouldn’t be a player that will cost much term or dollars to retain. And if it turns out he’s a bad fit for whatever reason, team headed to the playoffs may have interest them at which point you could grab a pick.

Yeah, I don’t think the Flames will retain.
I think their preference will be to retain on Mangiapanne and Kuzmenko/Sharangovich. Guys with one year left on those two remaining retention spots.
That said, I still think Coleman has some pretty good value at full freight. He brings a lot to the table competitive teams will want. Especially for the next two years. Last year of the deal, cross that bridge when you get there. Teams who are trying to win take these gambles.

I like it without 28th. Andersson should be worth the 11th pick all on his own as a solid #3 RHD. Making the cap work with Samuelsson & Mangi is also a plus for Buffalo. No way I add the 28th just for the privilege of giving up the best player and taking a cap dump.

I have gotten an early morning text here in Vegas. I believe Calgary has a deal in place if a player at a teams draft position isn’t there.. Source believes it Ottawa. The cost will be steep and may require McKenzie. He doesn’t believe Ramus is available currently and if he was every team will submit an offer.
I haven’t been able to get a confirmation from another source but then again it’s 630 in the morning here in Vegas.
Utah is shopping their 1st for the right player. Marner is the name but he isn’t going to wave ####.
Seattle is leaning hold but someone close thinks they may swap with Montreal and include Wright.
It’s spicy down here.
Also… oilers suck. Their brass arrived last night. Don’t want to be here.

Aside from the fact he has a full NMC I think Backlund would be moveable over Coleman. And even more so next year.

Sorry just to clarify:
Is this saying a deal around swapping picks with Ottawa? So 9+ Weegar for 7?
Or
7 for Weegar++
