I hope Flames don't make these bad deals. 10 million needs to be worth more than the pleasure of drafting in the 2nd round.
You suggested sending money back. There's no deal to be made for anyone if you trade salary back. The high pick goes away and all you're left with is a swap of bad contracts. What's the point of that?

A 2nd round pick is a helluva lot better than nothing if you're trying to rebuild, and Mikheyev fills a slot on a team that really has no emerging talent coming into the league, while helping them reach the cap floor.

Context matters a lot. It's good for Chicago. It could be good for the Flames as a concept, but they have a lot of forwards signed already, so bad fit at the moment.

I don't think so. The trade is probably contingent on Chicago retaining some salary and flipping him to another team. So he'd have to waive for both.

I was thinking about that with respect to Draisaitl. 1x$18M for them to have one more shot at it and then have the drama-filled decision summer? It'd be tough to turn that down and he'll still get his retirement deal.

I'm sure he'd turn it down in a flash and go for the retirement contract right away. He knows he's not the only player in the league with elbows.

So combine this with the Blueger resigning and the Canucks have about 22M in cap to play with.

Not sure a 2nd is worth paying a black hole on offence $10 million over two years. Questioning this from Chicago’s perspective.

Trying to counter the positive of Bedard with bad players to keep them in the lottery hunt the next couple seasons to have a line of McKenna-Bedard-Demidov?

That’s what was said about Kuzmenko and Dickson, and each proved to be much better with their new teams.

Mik was getting 4th line minutes with 60% defensive zone starts.

I expect an uptick with better ice time with Chicago.

I'm not so sure. Would you? I'd take a 1-year deal like that at 30, then a retirement deal, then grovel for Corey Perry deals after if I felt like it. Will beat what he gets at 37.

Nope. 8x12.5 is a lot better than 1x18 and risking a career ending injury.

Using that logic he's risking that now by not signing a retirement deal with the Oilers and playing for 1x$8.5.

I guess. If I had that much money already in the bank and that much talent, I'd be out to maximize future earnings, not minimize risk.

I could see the Turcotte deal working for both sides - it's a huge deal to go from nothing to $2.325M. If you already have 8 figures in the bank you can afford to be way more aggressive.

Here's the question:

Who's going to be dumb enough to offer Draisaitl $18 million for one year? A contender would have to shed several good players just to get that kind of cap space. A rebuilding team isn't a Draisaitl away from contention. Teams on the bubble have a combination of both those problems. And the Oilers themselves are not going to blow that kind of money just to kick their UFA problem one year down the road, and have Draisaitl and McDavid needing new contracts at the same time.
