Draft Pick
|
Just a couple of thoughts.
I really hope that we don't get Buium. He's got a bit of an Adam Fox vibe to me.
Having said that, I think it's logical for us to take a defenceman at #9, as regards to a development timeline. You want to grow your team together so in four/five years we become an emerging powerhouse. Defence takes longer to figure out the NHL game, so it makes sense to pick a D in this draft, with the assumption that we're going to have some high end F options in 2025 and 2026.

Buium should be NHL ready in a year if he's not already now.
Based on that timeframe, it would be incredibly stupid for him not to sign with the team that drafts him.

Dickinson kind of looks like Monahan.

Plus I've been thinking a lot of having the Ying to McDavids Yang in the BOA. The answer to McDingus.
I don't know if McDavids skating could overcome a Silayev that can keep up with him. Close him off, hit him, take the puck and skate away on him.

I like the way you think, but McDavid will be gone from Edmonton by the time Silayev is maturely controlling the backend.

Somehow if the Flames managed to get Lindstrom and Ritchie in the first round I'd be really really excited.

For the 28th, I have 3 names:
Andrew Basha - #23 by consolidated ranking
Cole Hutson - #39 by consolidated ranking
Nikita Artamonov - #25 by consolidated ranking
I would be ecstatic with one of these 3 players.

I know we talk about it every year but it seems like it’s getting worse with top American prospects going the college route and then choosing to not sign with the team that drafted them. Rutger McGroarty might be traded by the jets because he won’t sign this offseason. I know the stats show it’s not as common as it seems but it keeps happening - especially to Canadian teams.
I wonder if this is starting to make teams like Calgary prefer players out of the CHL or even out of Russia with their first round picks. This could apply to guys like Buium or Eiserman.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I thought I read or heard Conroy say they had a great conversation with Buium who would be happy to play in Calgary. Theres some PTSD for sure but you have to roll the dice and take these kids at their word.

The big difference with Buium and some others is that since they have 1 year of college under their belt, they would need to play a fifth college year to go UFA. I think the odds of that happening with top picks is basically 0.

From an athletic article:
"Winnipeg wanted to sign McGroarty to a professional contract in April but was unwilling to promise a path to playing time. Whereas
McGroarty’s University of Michigan teammates Frank Nazar and Gavin Brindley signed with Chicago and Columbus, respectively
— and played NHL games, like McGroarty’s former Michigan teammates Adam Fantilli and Luke Hughes did last season — the Jets
were focused on their upcoming playoff run."
"The Jets didn’t view McGroarty as ready to make that kind of impact, nor were they ready to guarantee him a roster spot in the NHL
next season. McGroarty could sign and come to training camp but risked being demoted to the AHL instead of trying to lead his
Michigan team to a national championship."
Basically- I think it's the Jets fault with this one. High profile players from high profile programs want to play in the show or atleast get an opportunity if they do sign.

I guess that’s true. The problem is I’m sure every player says that to teams. And you still end up with Adam Fox, Cutter Gauthier and Rutger McGroarty.

I think they get a free 2nd rounder if they don't sign him, so whoever wants him has to blow that out of the park. They can wait 2 years to do it, and he's already over 20. Winnipeg holds all the cards on this one, no need for them to panic.

FlamesTV had a Conny interview in Vegas. The list is pretty done. Said they're getting a ton of calls on moving up or down.
This looks like it's going to be a fun draft weekend to watch

Really feels like a good draft to evaluate flames’ scouting staff (in a couple years). Lots of picks in the top four rounds, willingness to take risks on upside because of all of those picks, staff fully engaged because of a high first rounder and a bunch of regular picks in the first four rounds.
Time to shine, Button and team!

The Barn Burner mock draft had the Flames taking Dickinson and Letourneau with the two 1st rounders.
Meh.

I am not even joking when I say my lists for both picks are in entirely the opposite order.
Other than Connolly, guy’s a dingus.
I also think the 28 has more value in a trade for players or cap management or further futures than it does as a pick this year. Would like to see the team get creative with it.

I got me a wild gut feeling that 28th is gonna go for a young RFA center from a team bereft of picks.
