Third stringer actually.

The Oilers are unlikely to ever have such an easy path to the finals again. This year was their shot. Predictably, they blew it.

I can't believe Edmonton has had almost decade of McDavid and Leon and have ZERO rings to show for it. That is a historically embarrassing feat for the Oilers.

You love to see it.

It gets even funnier when they start talking about individual points and scoring awards and the Conn Smythe.
For Reference:

What position do you have to be to be called "a contender"? Top 1/3? Top 1/4?

The Oilers have been in the top 3rd of the league 3 times since 1990/91.

The Oilers have been in the top quarter of the league ONCE since 1990/1991.

The Oilers have been in the top 10 overall - 3 times since 1990/91.

Are the Oilers a contender because they finished 6th overall and 9th overall in the last 2 years?

Since 1990/91, the SC Champion has averaged 4.8th overall (median 4). It has been won by a team 10th or lower in the reg season standings 3 times in that timeframe (Both Kings wins, and the St Louis Win), one of which was inevitable becasue both teams in teh finals were 10th or lower.

Didn't Boeser also get injured for the Canucks?

Edmonton had a fairly lucky run to the finals. L.A. was by far the worst team to make the playoffs, and the other 2 teams had significant players out of the line-up.

LOL @ them pushing hard to get Leon to comment on his contract situation.
When he wont answer he pivots to McDavid to comment on what he thinks Leon should do...

So cringeworthy.

Third stringer but probably higher on their actual depth chart. Sort of like Wolf was higher on a lot of people's depth charts than Vladar.

It was not even the Canucks backup, it was their 3rd string with a handful of games played in the league and they still struggled to beat him. They had the easiest path in the league to the finals. Avoiding the Avs and the Knights will likely not happen again. Everything fell into place for them this year to get to the finals

Edit: someone else said it, whoops

Yeah. "We look around and can't see a team in the league that's closer to winning than this one".

I heard it mentioned around here a decent amount (New England) that folks found it very entertaining to see McDavid play on this stage. Not surprising.

The question I raise is, at what point does the NHL/PA ever ‘intervene’ in a situation like this to discuss with a player who has potential to drive interest ($$) to leave a market where he is largely invisible?

I do recognize the downside as a Flames fan of this suggestion. My best response to that concern is that Edmonton showed no management ‘skill’ in acquiring McDavid… he was simply a lottery win. Should that lottery entitle them to having him his whole career?

If it were the Flames, I would be ok with having a player like that for 10 years. That’s more than enough, particularly if it was a generational lottery type win. Maybe if it was a sleeper late first round or something I’d feel different. But in this case, I think it’s more than fair for everyone (and best for the league, and everyone outside Edmonton) if McDavid moves to a bigger or growing market within 2 years.

Loved the media trying to fish out/convince Spear-the-balls Drai to re-sign asap LOL

The best thing to happen to the NHL was Gretzky going to LA. McDavid in a big US market would have been huge for the NHL and just goes to show that the lottery isn't fixed. The only downside is that he has absolutely no personality but he would be would be a big deal in a market like Chicago, LA, NY, etc as he's kind of the NHL's version of Mahomes (less the championships of course but Edmonton...).

RNH lying in bed with a strange woman.

RNH - "I'm sorry that's never happened before".

Woman - "What the 15 seconds of sex or the 45 minutes of crying"

RNH - "Is this where I pay you?"

Thanks Family guy, finally a quote that's useful.

Edmonton:
-Few Prospects
-Few picks in next couple of years
-Cap crunch makes it difficult to keep current group for next season - very likely to have less depth. No upcoming prospects that can fill holes cheaply.
-Cap Crunch makes it IMPOSSIBLE to keep current group 2 years out.

That Draisaitl sequence was so cringey. He didn't sound overly committed and you could tell it scared them. The media trying to convince him to make a commitment right then and there was embarrassing and probably doesn't help things. Then to go to MCdavid and ask him to join in... oof.

Not to mention you can make a good case against McDavid based on his poor 200 foot game.
Agreed. It’s always struck me as a funny designation to bestow upon him, especially with no clear metric.

It’s always reminded me of friendly (often beer-fueled) debates friends and I had around Crosby and Ovechkin around 2005-10. The consensus we arrived at was Ovechkin was probably the more pure skilled guy (certainly the more skilled goal scorer). We thought if you compiled top highlights of both guys, Ovechkin’s would probably be the more entertaining and, at times, astounding with what he could do. But, if you could only pick one to build your team around to win it all, it would be Crosby every time.

I think the talk around McAvi is similar. IMO, he is the most skilled player in the game. The things he does with the puck, and the speed he does them at, are amazing. I don’t think there’s another player that quite comes close right now. But shifting to who’s the one guy you’d build your team around to win it all? The discussion gets more interesting. Certainly he’s in the mix, but so are Mackinnon, Makar, probably Barkov, and a few others I’m probably missing.
