You look at the Buffalo Sabres rebuild and how many of those guys have gone on to win the cup over the past few years.
2019- Ryan O’Rielly wins it in his first year away from Buffalo
2023 - Eichel gets his cup
2024 - Reinhart, Montour, Okposo get a cup
Some of those guys were top picks or major trade acquisitions the Sabres made during their current 12 year rebuild.

Looks like NYR are going to part ways with Kakko.
There's a guy that fits Craig's vision, but what would it take from Calgary?

I would love to pick up Kakko.
Pelletier + pick for Kakko?

I'd say the later 2nd rounder this year and a lower end prospect like Kerins or Parker Bell would probably get a conversation going. Similar to the Sam Bennett trade.
I would be pretty tempted to make that move given Kakko could thrive with more ice time here. Even if he doesn't, he's probably still a pretty solid 3rd liner with skill.

No way you throw in Pelletier, one of the teams better prospects and a pick for Kakko. Odds are they don't end up all that different at this stage anyway. The Bennett situation is quite similar and returned a C level prospect and 2nd rounder.

Rasmus Ristolainen is that bad eh
If ROR had not left, the 2018-19 Sabres under Phil Housley probably could have done some damage. That was Dahlin's rookie year.

The Marner/Utah rumors make a decent amount of sense to me from the Toronto perspective. If the 6th pick is on the table and Marner is willing to go there then the Leafs could accomplish a key goal of drafting a top Dman and freeing up the cap space. We all know Treliving LOVES free agency despite what he says:
2014: Engellend, Raymond Hiller roughly $12M AAV combined but 3 years was the max term
2015: Frolik 5 year deal $4.3M
2016: Brouwer 4 year deal $4.5M
2017: none notable
2018: Neal 5 year deal at $5.5M Ryan 3 year deal somewhere around $3.5M
2019: none
2020: Markstrom 6 year deal $6M, Tanev 4 year deal $4.5M
2021: Coleman 6 year deal $4.9M
2022: Kadri 7 year deal $7M
2023: Beetuzzi, Domi, Klingberg all one year deals over $12M in cap, Reeves multi year deal
If he moves Marner for 6 I think he would draft a Dman since that is an organizational need for the Leafs. With the added cap space I see him chasing all the big names. I could see Stamkos, Tanev, Guentzel, Pesce, Zadorov etc will all be approached. Toronto is an easier sell than Calgary and the Flames often were able to sign big free agents under Tree. The move makes sense for both but does Marner want to go to Utah?

The question is, will he get carjacked in Utah like he did in Toronto? Poor Mitch.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Toronto has a great recent history of ignoring organizational need. Unsure if Tre will change that.

Fans are always going to overvalue picks (see the number of people willing to move him just for the #15), but I think you're probably adding too much here.
I would think something like #15 + 2nd + a warm body is a reasonable trade.
But if I were Conroy and considering this, I would wait to see who is still on the table at 15, before pulling the trigger.

Rando question here... how does retention work with PTBNL? Like if the Flames wanted to trade Mangiapane at the draft but they couldn't because they'd need to retain and they've used up their 3 slots could they make the trade sending out Bread as a PTBNL and then complete it on July 1 (when 2 of the slots will open) and retain on his salary? or does the retention need to be done at the time of the transaction?

I don't think you can do that in the NHL.
"Future Considerations" in an NHL trade I think has to end up being a draft pick (or end up being nothing), as the trade needs approval by the league for cap compliance before it goes through?
Otherwise you'd see this all the time for working around cap restrictions.

If it’s for a “pick” the other team just tells the team who to pick and they complete the trade after July 1.
NBA teams have to do this with the restriction that you can’t trade back to back 1sts. You see guys traded immediately after drafted vs trading the pick
This would be slightly different as they would have to wait a few days but same concept

Future considerations is just a placeholder now so a team is sending something the other way.
I think it used to actually be something. Kris Draper was traded for a buck or something lol

Yeah but you can't trade money in a deal anymore (well other than retention). And since the trade has to work with the salary cap, I would think future considerations could only be a draft pick, or rights to an unsigned player (something that doesn't impact the cap).

Yeah, now it is just used because a player can't be traded for nothing. Easier than a conditional pick that won't hit.

Of course, Detroit might then be unwilling to pull the trigger based on who might be there.

Future considerations could be a coke and a bag of chips or basically nothing.

I was just thinking about this Monday.
As much as it sucks Matthew and Sam didn't win here, being a Sabres fan is even worse.
