Good to have the intel as to what is being discussed but proof is in pudding. Prepared for another slow draft with lots of discussions but very little action.

I suspect you’re right. I’m sure the Flames will test the waters but TDL is the likely point in which these guys are dealt and I also suspect they will retain on both.

Maybe they'll trade Kuzmenko to the Canucks without retention and get a haul. They've done that kind of thing before!

I would say Frost is as warm a body as Mangiapane is. And wasn't Sharangovich just an average warm body before being traded to Calgary?

Am I remembering correctly that you had a real hard on for getting Frost in the past?

I had him in a trade proposal several years ago, yes. Believe he will be a really good 2nd line center with opportunity.

Lots of NJ fans knew that Sharky was better than the chances he had been given though very similar to Bennett in that regard. Many fans here (myself included) knew he would be better once traded. Not sure if Frost is viewed the same by Philly fans.

Yeah, it was pretty telling to me that on Devils forums, the majority of fans felt really happy for Sharangovich when he was traded because they felt he deserved more opportunity and fresh start. He had a lot of fans despite his down year.

Can anyone think of the last time a top 10 pick was traded at the draft? Not leading up to it or months/years before but at the draft itself. The most recent I can think of is 2013 when the Canucks traded Schneider for 9th overall (Bo Horvat). I’m sure there has been more recent trades… can anyone think of one though?

Dunno about more recent, but the two drafts before 2013 also saw a top ten pick moved.

Ottawa sent #7 to Chicago for Debrincat in 2022 at the draft. (Korchinski)
Vancouver gave Arizona #9 + in 2021 for OEL and Garland at that draft. (Guenther )
In 2017 Arizona sent #7 to the Rangers for Stepan and Raanta. (Lias Andersson)

2022 - The DeBrincat trade included the 7th overall pick.
2021 - The Ekman-Larsson trade included the 9th overall pick.
2017 - The Stepan trade included the 7th overall pick.

It seems funny that GMs become so conservative with trades leading up to and at the draft these days. They trade picks so readily the rest of the year. It seems like it’s as simple as wanting to make picks because they and their scouts are “excited” about the draft rather than doing what’s best for their team.
You even see it pretty much any time a team is in a position where they have to choose if they want to give up a pick now or a pick next year - if it was part of a trade condition for example. The pick could be outside the top 20 in the current draft but most teams would still choose to give up next years pick instead. Even if the pick was outside the top 25, I think most teams would choose to keep the pick now instead of giving it up despite the fact that such a move is likely not the smart decision. It’s the draft and everyone wants to make a pick.

Forgot all 3 of those. Good to know it’s happened a few times more recently than I thought. Hoping we see some action like that this week. Especially for the flames acquiring more picks.

It's the same dynamic as politicians making budget cuts. They draw up 5- or 10-year plans that will save all kinds of money by the end, but they don't touch this year's budget because that might cost them votes. All the political damage from actually cutting services is postponed so it can be someone else's problem.
In some ways, the GM of a pro sports club is more like a politician than a manager. PR is king.

Mangiapane is worthless right now. You’d have to incent a team to take him. Best course of action is to rehab his rep, help him have a good season and if he can pot 30 maybe get something at the TDL with retention.
But Rasmus is worth a lot and with retention I can’t see how there wouldn’t be a bidding war. I just don’t see us scorched earthing this team because his shoes can not be filled by any available FA in my opinion.
What else would they be discussing? Coleman?

Question because I’m too lazy to look it up - was the position of the pick known at the time of the trade? There was a comment about GMs being more reluctant to trade a top pick and I think (even with my examples pre 2013) there might be some where the pick was traded before the positions were known (ie at the TDL).
