There's no excusing him here.

My take
- I understand him not going to accept the award
- But it would have been admirable if he had.
And if he's the leader that he's described as - he should have.
As your self WWCD and you have your answer. Crosby would have done it. And that dude is as competitive as it comes. But he also understands the place he has in the sport.

Even if you don't do it for any one else, you do it for your parents/family.
That #### goes beyond hockey.
Oiler people defending it are out of touch. You can't call the guy a great leader and ambassador and be fine with it at the same time.
We all know you'd feel differently if it was a guy from the other dressing room.

Petty much this. He's team captain, apparently face of the NHL too, go stand there, don't smile, whatever. It's part of getting the award.
Yes you don't want to, you'll probably be boo'd as you do it, but if you're actually a captain and ambassador of the sport you look past that. Respect the trophy. Respect those who won it before you.
Being the first entitled shyte to refuse to come accept it just shows how out of touch you are with the league around you, being a leader, being a captain, hell just being greatful.
I've always thought McDavid wasn't a good captain, as he never seems to say anything to anyone about anything, ever. He just pouts. This cements that in to me.

Oh I was going to add a part about it being ok he didn't come out, but as I wrote that I kinda disagreed with myself in the end, so F that. He should have just sucked it up.
"Face of the league" shouldn't be too pouty to accept an award.

My cents is that like it or not he is one of the faces of the NHL. The NHL has been going out of their way to give him special treatment. Soucy suspension was them bending backwards to appease him. All he had to do is that photo op so the league could continue to pump his tires. Whether is did it unintentionally or not, he pissed on the NHL and just created more controversy around himself.

Understandable, but a missed opportunity for McDavid. It would have showed tremendous class to come out and except the award. Even though there were a lot of boos when it was announced, I bet the Panthers’ players would have rallied around him and showed their appreciation. Not the same level of respect the Flames showed to Linden after his final game, but still an epic moment.
Having said that, I don’t fault him at all.

I was happy to see Reinhardt and Verhaeghe score in the final game. It would’ve sucked a bit for them to go from stars to perceived no-shows in the final

Yeah I don’t have strong feelings about it.
But I do think it would have been a meaningful chance for fans from both sides, especially oilers fans who flew down, to provide him a public show of appreciation for a historic playoff run.
Would have been good for the game imo.

I have no problem with mcdavid not coming out.
The same people saying he should have come out would have been calling him selfish and that he is enjoying an individual award if he came out.

I wouldn't. Every other Conn Smythe winner from a losing team came out, and I wouldn't call any of them selfish. It's a tradition. You win the award, you show a bit of respect, you leave. How hard is that?

Both can be true. He can be a selfish player that chases personal achievements and still also disrespects the fans and the league when everything doesn't go his way. It's not an either/or situation.
Personally, I don't think he actively chases personal achievements though. I think those come because of his usage and that he really is a great offensive player. The Oilers organization though, I think they dictate his usage so that he gets personal accolades as a way to promote their own brand and hopefully make him happy enough to stay even if the team doesn't win a championship.

Oilers fans are blaming the bad ice in Florida for their loss. Even though both teams play on the same ice surface. Jesus they’re the dumbest fans in the world

No
You’re wrong on that count
I would definitely not have thought it was selfish to come out and get the award. Especially since every other conn Smythe winner has done it.
What makes him better than Glenn Hall for example?

It's not hard. Who cares what someone else did 30 years ago.
But I have no problem with McDavid not coming out like I literally care so little that I couldn't care less.
If he doesn't wanna come out that's his choice.
