Yeah, that's what he was doing. I haven't seen anything from McDavid that shows humility. He is full of sour grapes and he proved it again.
Normally I'd be disappointed and move on but McDavid is supposed to be the ambassador for the game and the guy the NHL is looking upon to be the leader. That was setting a poor example. He's leading in the wrong direction with that move.

I already saw an article this morning on McDiver's amazing leadership qualities in the face of a loss. Apparently he stayed on the ice until all of his teammates finished the handshake line. Wow, what a leader. Give me a break.
This article also claimed not coming out for the Conn Smythe was another form of leadership- showing he wanted to be with his team and not personal accolades. Never change media. Surprisingly, this was Sports Illustrated I think, not the Edmonton sun.
Was he told he won the Conn Smythe before leaving the ice?

This is perfect for an old oilers quote, different era, same entitlement lol.
“Sometimes there's just so much respect there that it boils over”
He won’t, my point is even in the best case scenarios you can dream up the oilers only have next year before significant restructuring.
They have next year? They can likely not even field a full roster unless they do some serious salary dumping. Signing 10 players with ~10M in cap space is not doable, and when 7 of those players are forwards it is impossible.
If they don't extend Draitsaitl this summer, they will also be staring down the barrel of losing him for nothing in 12 months, so the pressure is squarely on to make a move and to make it fast to free up cap room.
No draft picks, no cap room. It's starting to look like this window is closing. I find it truly hard to believe that they are going to find a bunch of bargain bin players willing to go at it again to fill these spots. Even if you want to offload Campbell and Kane, you still have to have assets to offer a team to take them and those are few and far between.

$10 million in cap space with only 14 players on the roster. Ten UFAs. Holloway and Broberg need new contracts. No prospects to speak of, and they have traded away seven picks in the next two drafts, so they're in no position to dump cap by offering sweeteners. And more than half their returning players are over 30.
They could open up some cap space this year by buying out Campbell. The cap hit for that buyout is only $1.1 million for '24-25. But it goes up to 2.3, then 2.6, in the two years when they'll need every penny to re-sign Draisaitl and McDavid.
Just when they finally got useful players in the bottom half of the roster, they're going to have to let most of them walk and replace them with whatever free agents are willing to sign cheap contracts.
Running it back is not going to be an option.
1) Trade a first round pick to off-load campbell. Sign a goalie at $1.5m. $3.5m saved. Now they have $13.5m
2) Sign three fourth liners for $4.5m. So now they have $9m
3) Sign two scrubs for $1.5. Now they have $7.5m
4) Resign Broberg, Holloway for a combined $3m.
5) They have $4.5m left for two third liners.

They can run it back...
Even if this scenario plays out with a bunch of scrubs coming back for nothing, you still have to win the lottery again with a cushy playoff draw against the weakest playoff team in the league - the Kings, and the Canucks playing an AHL goalie in the first two rounds. This Oiler team wasn't running the gauntlet with their lack of depth if they had to go through Vegas and Colorado out of the gate.
You also need to bank on another healthy regular season from the entire core player group and all of this needs to happen on a drastically shorter offseason that can result in slow starts thanks to lingering injuries and a lack of rest. Running it back like the Panthers did and teams like Pittsburgh have done recently is pretty rare and usually a product of a team with a lot of good young talent down the lineup that hasn't been fully paid yet. Something the Oilers can't really boast. I wouldn't bet on it happening.

Yeah, we're going to have fade at least one more season of this nightmare.
They only have $10 million to replace a bunch of players, but it's all depth. The main cogs are all set to return without raises and they can free up $3.9 million more next season with a Campbell buy out.
Campbell AHL cap hit was $3.8 so saving $2.7 mil and then they need a goalie.
Foegele, Brown and Janmarks PK numbers were off the charts good. Mcdavid carried them late in the playoffs offensively, but they gave up 4 goals on the PK and scored 3. Minus 1 on the PK is off the chart good and why they made it that far.
Foegele was on the ice for 3 HD scoring chances against all playoffs on the PK, 2 HDCF. Connor Brown was nearly even shots for and against on PK.
Their PK will not do this again and I can see the Oilers deciding they need to keep these guys.

They go all in for one more kick at it. And they won't be as good, and probably not as lucky, as this year - which wasn't enough. I truly hope they mortgage everything on one more shot with this core. This was the year all the dominoes fell in their favor and it wasn't enough. Unlikely that happens again next year

I will say, as someone who's married to a high school teacher (and my job also revolves around education, just for more mature learners), that while I agree that McDavid not coming out to accept the Smythe is not a "generational thing", there most certainly are generational behavioural trends for Gen Z (which McDavid is) and Gen Alpha that are concerning that are becoming more and more frequent. Entitlement and the whole "I don't have to do this if I don't want to" attitude being one of them.
So yes, I wouldn't blame McDavid no-showing his own award on it being a generational thing and would point the blame at him, I wouldn't fully discount it playing a role either as behaviour like this does seem to be more common amongst people his age and younger compared to older generations.
As the apparent face of the league, though, no excuses for him.
Agreed. I'm not in the same field, but have to work with teens sometimes, one area that really jumps out at me with that fevers is mass tardiness.
When they show up late, it's not even in an apologetic way either...it's more of a "what's your problem? I'm here" vibe. They don't even get what the issue is.
With WFH becoming much more common, I suspect this will get worse, as I can see it shifting more to "what you accomplished that day", and not what time you started at.
I kinda hate how I'm at the age of getting to "kids these days..." complaints, but here we are.
